John J. Varni

It is with deep sorrow that we announce John J. Varni, age 57, of San Ramon, California, passed away on January 5, 2024. Born June 6, 1966, John was a native of Benicia and dedicated 24 years of his life to service as a police officer with the Concord Police Department. In addition to his career in law enforcement, John served as a dedicated softball and football coach for many years, guiding and inspiring countless young athletes. John is survived by his beloved wife Cathy, his two children Marisa and Jack, and his loyal German Shepherd dogs Max and Zeus. He is also remembered by his mother, Mary Ann; his brothers, Tom, Frank, and Ed; and a host of in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. A devoted husband, father, coach, and friend, John will be dearly missed by all who knew him. May he rest in peace, leaving behind cherished memories of a life well-lived. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 26, 2024 at St. Dominie's Catholic Church in Benicia, California, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to German Shepherd Rescue of Nothern California, a cause dear to John's heart.
