John Kulhavi
February 25, 2023
John and I met in high school at De La Salle, our friendship started when we were on the track team (Weg was All State in High Jump) and our love for playing and watching sports, especially the NCAA Tourney (starting our NCAA pool that lasted for years) or just hanging out with friends at the teen dance club, shooting pool at CJ Barrymores or just playing cards or sports at one of our houses. Graduating from DLS we both decided to attend Central Michigan University, so we decided to test our friendship and room together, which we did for three years and was one of the best decisions we made. After our first two days at CMU (attending our first Keg party and our first Saturday at the Wayside) for the next four and half years we would no longer be known as John and John (Weg and Kulhavi), because the future of Speed and Hovich (aka HoDaddy) was born and took off. We thought it was cool when we walked on campus and everyone knew who Hovich and Speed were or walked into a party and the place shouted our names, we even made it a trio of Hovich, Speed and Goofy when O'Malley joined us at CMU our sophomore year. In college, we did just about everything together and made many lifetime friends whether getting you up to go going to class, parties, sporting events, beating everyone in Euchre, getting sick together trying chewing tobacco for the first time, sneaking party balls into our dorm room, road trips to State, cooking our famous venison chili and having our buddies over for the NCAA Tournament or just relaxing we always had a great time together and knew we could count on each. Running in late for our college graduation, we left CMU together and continued building our friendship with many more fun things we did. First going to Las Vegas (we loved playing Let It Ride) for years to celebrate our Birthdays in June or taking some of our buddies with us to Vegas for the NCAA Tourney. Then Wednesday evenings golfing at Maple Lanes Golf Course, hanging out in Hamtramck at Bakers Streetcar (going on the bus trips, like the legendary Chicago trip and Wrigley field) watching the NCAA Tourney and card parties with Joe, Scott and the guys, going to many sporting events and then when John talked me into getting Lions season tickets together, which we had for years at the Silverdome and Ford Field, as well as for years working together at Hazel Park Race Track as security guards are just some of the fun and memorable things we continued to do together. When I got married, my good friend, Hovich, was right there by my side, a part of my wedding party celebrating with me another memorable moment. Unfortunately, the last few years, as life got busy, we did not see each other as much as we should of. JoAnne and Kimberly my thoughts and prayers are with the both of you. Whether you knew him as Weg, Hovich, HoDaddy or John, we all knew him as our Friend. If you spent time with him, then you knew John as being down to earth, intelligent, a prankster at times and a fun loving big hearted guy who everyone loved and enjoyed to be around. My friend, God took you from us way to soon, you will be missed, but not forgotten. I will remember and cherish all the great times we had together, you were a big part of many happy and memorable times in my life and I am thankful and fortunate to have known you. Your Buddy Speed
