A fellow Cherokee from the class of 1963. Jack was always a respected classmate as well as a teammate. Was fortunate to play with him during the very successful accomplishments winning 33 straight games in the late 50´s and early 60´s. My thoughts and prayers are with you Marilyn and the family.

So many wonderful memories were shared with Jack and the family and our family back in the 80s and 90s while growing up. Our father and Jack are a week apart in age, and both attended Sequoia HS and worked at the SO together for a few decades. When Jack retired from the SO, he worked at CSM where our mother taught. We always knew she was safe because Jack was in charge. One of the core memories from our childhood was spending every 4th of July at their house BBQing and lighting off fireworks knowing we wouldn't get in trouble because law enforcement was already present :)
RIP to one of the good ones.

Such sad news! We were childhood friends and then reconnected when his twins went to Selby Lane I had the pleasure of knowing Marilyn and his sons and send love and condolences to them

My memories of him are of such professionalism, kindness and coming down to the basement to check in on the dispatchers. He was funny, chatty, interested and made sure we knew him because he knew how important that was, and he knew how important our job was. What a great man and example to others. RIP Captain, may your family know how impactful you were to so many.

I had the pleasure of knowing him at Sequoia High School and then worked with him and for him at the department. 'He loved animals and had a natural way of making people feel comfortable and welcome'....these words exemplify what I saw of a very caring, intelligent person. My condolences to the Wells family.

I had the privilege of knowing John during a memorable chapter in both our lives - the John Linley Frazier trial in the early 1970s. I was a reporter then, and John was a court bailiff, steadfast as ever. Reporters and lawmen don´t always see eye to eye, but John and I built a good professional relationship that turned into quiet friendship.

Beyond his reputation for calm authority and fairness, John was kind, steady, and unfailingly decent - the same man in uniform as he was at the Dennis Nelson gym, where a few of us diehards gathered at noon. He carried himself with quiet strength and good humor, and I will always remember him that way.

With deepest respect,
Duane Sandul, Retired Reporter

Was so sorry to hear about Johns passing. I had the pleasure of working with him for over 30 years at the Sheriff's Office. He had the gift of leadership and a calming, yet forceful, presence.
He played a significant part in professionalizing our responses to major events because of his ability to organize, plan and implement the Departments personnel and equipment to meet the crises at hand.
A true professional.

I worked for and with him in my many years at SMSO. Always fair and enjoyable to work with. One of the good guys.
