John Douglas Whinnie, a man of steady faith and strong character, was called home to the Lord on November 22, 2025, at the age of 94. He was born on September 23, 1931, in Detroit, Michigan. Throughout his life, John was known for his clear thinking, quiet confidence, and the memorable stories he enjoyed sharing.
John grew up in Detroit and attended the Henry Ford Trade School, where he developed the skills that shaped his career. One of his proudest accomplishments was traveling to Japan to oversee the installation of a major automotive machine for Toyota. After returning to the United States, he continued his professional work as General Manager at the former Cleveland Trencher Company in Euclid. In every role, he was dependable, precise, and committed to doing the job well.
After moving from Detroit to Mentor and later settling in Chardon, John enjoyed a life centered around simple, meaningful routines. He loved golfing and spent many years playing in the Pine Ridge Golf Course leagues. He was also proud of achieving a "hole in one," a memory he carried with quiet satisfaction. He took great care of his property in Chardon, spending countless hours tending the yard and cutting down trees. Staying active and independent meant a great deal to him.
John's faith guided him throughout his life. He was a devoted member of the Church of St. Mary in Chardon, where he served as an usher and found purpose in serving his church community.
John was a devoted family man. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (née McKee), and his siblings George, Mary Elizabeth, and Rebecca. He is survived by his children, Douglas (Jan) of Mentor, OH; Katherine (David) West of Twinsburg, OH; David of Jefferson, OH; and Jon Andrew of Mentor, OH. He leaves behind ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren who will carry forward his memory.
John was also proud of his Scottish heritage. He enjoyed Dalwhinnie Scotch-not just as a drink but as a reminder of his roots. It connected him to where his family came from, and he valued the conversations and friendships built with others who appreciated the same traditions.
A Funeral Mass will be held at the Church of St. Mary, 401 North St., Chardon, OH, on December 4, 2025, at 11:00 AM. Private interment will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon beside his wife.
Arrangements are entrusted to Burr Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Online condolences may be shared at burrservice.com.
