I first knew John Wilson in 1976 when he and his wife, Lauri, were building their house in the woods on the Curritoman. My late wife, Edith, and I would drive out from Westmoreland County and join others in roofing the house. I enjoyed many conversations with him about education on the Northern Neck and about his interesting work on the local newspaper. He would drive over from his house with Lauri and their daughter, Jenna. He and I would cover the local football games. John took the photos, and I would draft a short summary of the game and get comments from the coaches. Westmoreland´s high school, Washington and Lee, fielded powerful football teams in the late `70s easily scoring 50 points with each team member getting a chance to play. John found the team newsworthy.
John had a hearty laugh and always had jokes to share. He was well educated and freely loaned me books. After Edith and I moved to Charlottesville for graduate school, we saw John and Lauri only in the summers. He was an interesting man, well-read and he had many interests. He was a true family man.
