Johnie Delbert Hughes received his Heavenly reward on December 8, 2023 at his home in North Little Rock Arkansas at the age of 91 years. Johnie was born to Thomas and Elsie (Watkins) Hughes on August 14, 1932 in Joy, Arkansas. He was a deacon from December 1957 at the First Free Will Baptist Church in North Little Rock where he was a teacher of the junior high boys and later to the Trailblazer’s class. He also was a handyman to several church projects. Johnny was a retired fireman for the North Little Rock fire department. He retired as captain for the Central Station serving from March 16, 1961 until July 5, 1995. Johnie also served in the Army for two years.
Johnie is preceded in death by his parents, sister Geneva Stayhorn; brothers Danny Hughes, Bill Hughes, Wayne Hughes, Michael Hughes, Glenn Hughes, Clyde Hughes; infant daughter Debra Jean Hughes and infant grandson Jeremy David Hudman.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 70 years Ruby Gray Hughes; a son Ted Hughes of Mayflower; daughter Lori Hudman of Jacksonville; grandchildren Daniel (Becca) Hudman, Jason (Justine) Hudman, Adam Hughes, Jacob (Candace) Hudman; four great-grandkids Carlee Jade Hudman, Lily Mae Hughes, Jack and Hayes Hudman, a future child of Jason and Justine Hudman; sister Lilly Faye McCallister, Laverne Davis; brother, Paul Hughes; a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 13 followed by a funeral at 11:00 AM at the First Free Will Baptist Church, 2001 Parkway Dr., North Little Rock. Honorary pallbearers include the North Little Rock retired Fireman and First Free Will Baptist Deacons. Burial with Military Honors will be at 10 AM on Thursday, December 14 at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Free Will Baptist Church.
