Johnnie received his education in the Public School System of Sumter, South Carolina and was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School. In 1971, he relocated to
Paterson, New Jersey, where he continued to make a living surrounded by family and friends.
During his early years in Paterson, he began working at Paterson Shade, where he remained from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. After retiring from Paterson Shade, he took on several jobs to stay active during his retirement years, which included working at Shell gas station on Market Street, where he was well known and loved by all of his customers. He later retired from the Paterson Board of Education.

In 2006 he joined Canaan Baptist Church- Paterson, under the leadership of the late Dr. Gadson L. Graham, where he served faithfully as a member of the Usher Board.
Johnnie was cool and loved his cars (especially his Cadillac) and always liked to keep a wad of cash in his pockets. He enjoyed a good party, loved to laugh and could often be found hanging out and spending time with friends and loved one. Johnnie had a caring heart. He made it a point to visit friends in the hospital and checked on those who were sick and unable to get around. Not only will he be missed, but he will also be fondly remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit and unwavering faith.
