Garner, North Carolina - Johnny Leonard, age 72, passed away on January 16, 2026. He was born in Macon, Georgia November 2, 1953, to the late Hazel and Arthur Leonard. Johnny spent his entire career in law enforcement. He worked for the FBI, SBI and retired as a Deputy Director of CCBI. He was certified by the International Association of Identification in fingerprints and shoe tracks. He trained many latent print examiners all over the country as well as internationally.
He leaves behind his wife of almost 49 years Meshellia, a brother Larry Leonard (Jo-Ann). He was preceded in death by his brothers Joseph, Garrison, Harry, and sister Betty Yohennes.
A private burial service will be held in Kentucky.

Johnny was a great person and a wonderful instructor. Johnny was the most passionate person about latent fingerprints I have ever known. I learned a lot from Johnny over the years through his courses. Johnny will be missed by many at my department.

Johnny was an instrumental part of the Latent Print community. He trained the next generation to take over where he left off. He gave so much of himself, and will be greatly missed. I am fortunate to have known him. Rest in peace Johnny!

Johnny is the reason I became a fingerprint technician. I was an intern with CCBI and I loved learning from him. He was kind and brilliant. Thankful that he was in my life to guide me forward.
