Jon Close

Jon Close, of Ishpeming, passed away on June 8, at the age of 52 at U.P. Health System in Marquette due to complications arising from longstanding health challenges.
Born in Michigan on December 6, 1971, son of Thomas and Beatrice Close, Jon was raised in Kalkaska and graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1990. Many of his friends called him "Opie" due to his uncanny resemblance to Opie Taylor from the Andy Griffith Show. Following high school, Jon attended Northern Michigan University and became a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He was always proud of being a "TKE" and the friendships that went along with it.
In addition to Kalkaska and Marquette, Jon spent some time living in Springfield, Missouri and Cincinnati, Ohio before moving to Ishpeming 15 years ago. Jon was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and loved to watch old war documentaries. Most of Jon's professional career was spent pursuing his love of cooking, most notably holding the position of "Head Chef" at various restaurants.
Jon is survived by his mother, Bea, his brother, Jamie and daughter Giorgia. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas.
Honoring his wishes, no services will be held. Any memorials in honor of Jon's life can be in the form of a donation to diabetes research and education.
