Jon Douglas Gregory

Just last week I heard that God had other plans for His loving son, Jon. Douglas and I had yet to spend time getting to know one another. The few times we had to talk, it was as if I was catching up with an old friend that I hadn't seen for a while.

Jon was generous with his time and skills. He offered himself and helped my son, Matthew with his middle school science project. Jon was instrumental in getting Matthew's business up and running. He was much more than that though. I contacted Jon in a difficulty and there he was. He made himself available. He went so far as to contact my son to get him moving in the right direction. Met with obstinance, Jon persevered. That's Jon though, he never gave up.

In gratitude for Jon's loving kindness, I will attend mass on his birthday and continue to pray for Jon. Will you join me in praying Jon to Heaven?

Never would I have imagined this. You were once so significant in my life as my on and off and on again college boyfriend. It was such a transformative stage and age.

Five plus years - most of my college years and a few after graduation - contain such bittersweet memories with you.

In tribute, I'll chose to remember the good - you frozen in time in your charming and magnetic college era.

I raise a toast to you. To the sweet and not the bitter:

You were fiercely caring and generous - especially to your brother Jeff, friends from high school, college fraternity brothers, and beyond.

You were funny and irreverent. Often wildly inappropriate. You made many fun but questionable college-age choices - some that can't even be put into writing.

You were known and loved by many across the CSU campus - Potentially a "Jon Gregory for President" banner is still hanging in some fraternity house in Ft Collins ...

You were the life of the party - always up for a fun time and crazy antics. Often the ring leader of indelible moments. "Safety Dance" on your surfboard coffee table? Spring Formal - that's actually a campout? A greyhound road trip to San Diego for the CSU bowl game? Washington's + Sullivans? Broncos superbowl victory celebration in Old Town? Lodo + Denver Diner + Parkway? NYE for Y2K? Clubbing in NYC? Up and moving to NYC just after 9/11? Yes to it all.

You were loving of the outdoors - lacrosse, golf, skiing, wind surfing - as long as it wasn't motorized or what you called "6A madness." (My only broken bone is from mountain biking together in Vail.)

You were smart - especially in IT, coding and problem solving. Landing a great job with IBM after college, despite your dismal GPA. You were committed to a lifetime of learning.

You were hardworking - Driving countless "pizza pipeline" deliveries in that old Honda, to help pay for college. Mowing the golf greens early every morning one summer. Putting your all into efforts with student government and your fraternity. Renovating your first home near wash park.

Our paths would cross on rare occasion and I always wished you well. I know you wished the same for me.

I took for granted the fragility of life, even after the sudden and recent passing of another dear friend from college. You reached out in sympathy then, and assumed our paths would cross again - perhaps poolside or on the lacrosse field as I cheered on my Cora and you celebrated your Riley. Our daughters are just weeks apart in age.

How could you die so suddenly - without a proper goodbye to your parents and brother, your daughter, your extended family, and your cherished friends? Without celebrating 50? Without getting to Mexico with Riley?

You've left us all to search for the lessons in your living, in your loving, and in your dying.
