Jon Skattum Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beckman-Williamson Funeral Homes & Crematory - Cocoa Beach on Jan. 19, 2026.
Jon Andrew Skattum of Viera, Florida, a journalist and filmmaker who spent his life behind and in front of a camera, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2026. He was 67.

Mr. Skattum moved to Brevard County in 1986 to work as sports director and anchor at WAYK, a Palm Bay-based television station.

He went on to work as a producer, director and cinematographer for Shot in the Dark Productions in Melbourne, a television, film and documentary production company. During his time there, he worked on long- and short-form films and IMAX productions. Some of his credits include "Michael Jordan to the Max" in 2000; "One More Orbit," an Apollo 11 documentary, in 2000; and "Modern Marvels," a History Channel series on the history of technology, in 2001.

After Shot in the Dark, Mr. Skattum worked as a production account manager for Spectrum Reach.

While working other jobs, Mr. Skattum continued to work as a freelance on-camera anchor, which gave him the opportunity to co-anchor the launch of a Russian Proton to the International Space Station and to provided play-by-play announcing for local and national sporting events.

Mr. Skattum spent the past six years sharing his knowledge of photography, video and film with students at Eastern Florida State College as an adjunct instructor in the digital media department.

Before moving to Brevard, Mr. Skattum worked as a sports anchor and reporter for television stations in Madison, Wisconsin; Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Victoria, Texas; and St. Louis Missouri.

A graduate of University of Wisconsin - Madison, Mr. Skattum reunited with Sue Normoyle, his college sweetheart, in 2017. She lived in Northern Virginia, so they began a long-distance romance. They married on Oct. 22, 2022, in Milwaukee, and she joined him in Melbourne.

Mr. Skattum is survived by his wife, Sue Normoyle Skattum; brothers Robert (Patty) Skattum of Arizona and Mark (Laura) Skattum of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna Weir Skattum; his parents, Robert Laverne Skattum and Ione Skattum.

A Mass of remembrance is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Viera.

Mr. Skattum was a proud dog lover and an organ donor. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to organizations that facilitate organ donation or to the Brevard Humane Society.

My sympathy for your husband and brother. I graduated high school in Monroe, WI with Jon. We played basketball together our freshman and sophomore years if I remember correctly. Had not seen him in years but remember him as a great guy.
