Jonathan Harvey Obituary

Harvey, Jonathan P.
WYNANTSKILL -
Jonathan P. Harvey, a prominent Albany trial attorney, founding member and first President of the National Association of Dealer Council, and passionate, accomplished sailor, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at Albany Medical Center Hospital, with wife, Margaret S. Harvey, and family, at his side. Jonathan was born in Albany, N.Y., and was a resident of Wynantskill, N.Y., and Gloucester, Mass. He was 84.
Jonathan was a graduate of The Milne School, The University of Pennsylvania, and The Albany Law School of Union University, and was admitted to legal practice in 1967. He began his law career alongside his father, Arthur J. Harvey; and his brother Jack D. Harvey; and in 2025, retired as Senior Partner of the Jonathan P. Harvey Law Firm. Jonathan was a member of the Committee on Character and Fitness, and was the former Chairman of the Committee on Professional Standards of the Appellate Division, Third Department, State of New York, and the New York State Bar Association Committee to Re-Write the Code of Professional Responsibility. He was a member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, a Diplomate of the International Academy of Litigators, and Senior Council Member of the American College of Barristers. Other associations include membership at The Fort Orange Club, The Albany Country Bar Association, and The Rensselaer Country Bar Association.
Jonathan was devoted to and proud of his family. In addition to his wife, Margaret, survivors include brother, Jack D. Harvey (Christine); children, Johns H. Harvey (Jane) and Caroline R. Harvey (Lucas); and two grandchildren, Kala Sunshine Harvey and Maya Rose Harvey. Jonathan maintained close bonds with his extended family and enjoyed lifelong friendships, nourished by shared interests in the practice of law, art, music, literature, antique cars, travel, and sailboats.
Jonathan was a member of The New York Yacht Club, The Eastern Point Yacht Club, a founding member of The Lake George Corinthian Yacht Club, and a former member of The Island Sailing Club. His first sail was aboard a catboat on the Mohawk River, just months after his birth, and he reminisced often about his years messing about in boats in Gloucester Harbor, as a boy with his brother, staying out so late and so often that his mother, Alice D. Harvey, became accustomed to calling the harbormaster in the evening to get them back to shore. Jonathan's vibrant adventures as a mariner continued throughout his life: he raced 12 meters in Cowes and Star boats on Lake George, crewed on ocean racing yachts to Spain, finished first across the line aboard the Dutch yacht Stormvogel in the 1964 Newport-Bermuda Race, was skipper and helmsman of Herreshoff BB 25 Resolute, first to finish and overall winner of the Marblehead leg of the 2018 Panerai Classic Yacht Regatta, and was proud to be a multiple years winner of the Commodore's Cup, at the Eastern Point Yacht Club.
Jonathan was a member of Congregation Berith Sholom, in Troy, N.Y., and Temple Ahavat Achim, in Gloucester, Mass. Services will be held on Monday, January 19, 2026, at Congregation Berith Sholom, 167 Third St., in Troy, N.Y., at 1:00 p.m. A summer Celebration of Life will be held at a time to be determined, on Bass Rocks, in Gloucester, Mass.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the charity of your choice, Congregation Berith Sholom, Temple Ahavat Achim, or The Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, a nonprofit established to fulfill the traditional Jewish commitment to Hakarat HaTov, the searching out and recognition of goodness.

Margaret, I just learned of Jonathan's passing. He was a very very bright shining light, in his humanity, professionalism, humor, sportsmanship, kindness and keen intelligence. I remember every meeting with him, and your kindness in hosting us for a visit to your home. May his memory be a blessing, because in fact it is.

Mr. Harvey was a fine combination of knowledge, kindness, curisoity, and love for his friends and family. He was a great help while I was Director of the Patient Advocacy League. My sincere condolences to his loving wife, Margaret, and all family members.

Jonathan had many earned titles and honors. The one that we prefer is "Mainstay." We know that, like the mainstay on a sailing vessel, his stabilizing presence was vital in so many ways - and he will be missed in so many ways. We share in the loss of our friend and fellow Congregation Berith Sholom member, and we offer condolences to Margaret and to the extended Harvey family.

I'm sad to hear of Johnathan's passing. He was my neighbor and customer at Anthony's Park Plaza. He was a man of great character and integrity. He was good to my niece Maria Daily in her time of need. Although I hadn't seen him in years I will miss him. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Jonathan was one of those special people who was always a joy to talk to. At conferences, I always made it a point to seek him and his wife Margaret out, just because how truly pleasurable each encounter with them was. Thoughts and prayers to Margaret and family.
