Jonnie Blaine Barefoot, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on September 12th, 2025. His life was one of hard work, devotion, and a heart always open to others.
Born on November 20th, 1950 in Johnston County to the late John Ethol and Susan B. Barefoot. Jonnie developed an early love for the mountains and the simple joys of the outdoors. His happiest moments were spent with a fishing pole in hand, cutting grass and cleaning up the yard, working on vehicles, lending a helping hand to a neighbor or being surrounded by his children and grandchildren, who were the pride and joy of his life.
For 30 years, Jonnie served with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, Division of Highways, where he was known for his work ethic, problem-solving skills, and the steady hand he brought to every project. Even outside of work, friends and family knew him affectionately as "Mr. Fix It"-there was never a challenge too big or small that he couldn't figure out.
Upon retirement, Jonnie devoted himself to his wife, Nancy and was married for 44 years. Alongside of Nancy, they built a legacy of service to those in need. Together, they found the Jordan Chapel Meals on Wheels program in their community, ensuring that neighbors in need received nourishment in underserved areas. Their work has touched countless lives and will continue to serve as a testament to their faith, compassion and dedication.
Jonnie's legacy is not only in his many accomplishments, but in the love he shared with all who knew him. He will be remembered for his laughter, his wisdom, and the joy he found in life's simplest treasures.
He is survived by his wife Nancy, his brother Jerry (Janice) of Garner, NC, his children, John Barefoot (Brittni) of Mount Olive, NC and Susan Hill (Dennis) of Stantonsburg, NC, his grandchildren Noah, JJ, and Magnolia Hill, and many dear family and friends who will carry his memory forward.
Jonnie was preceded in death by his parents, John Ethol and Susan B Barefoot of Newton Grove, sister Mary Elaine Barefoot of Mount Olive, and brother, Linwood Barefoot of Newton Grove.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, September, 14 2025 at 3:00 PM at Friendly Holiness PFWB Church, Mt. Olive. A visitation will be held from 2:30-3:00 PM prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jordan Chapel Community Meals on Wheels Program or 3HC Home Health & Hospice continuing his legacy of service to others.
Though he has left this world, his hands, his heart, and his spirit will forever be felt in the lives he touched and the ones that knew him.
