Jose Salome Castanon, 90 years old, passed away July 31, 2023. He was born October 20, 1932, in El Arenal, Zacatecas, Mexico to Jose Castanon and Benita Garcia. He was married to Maria Salome Castanon in 1954 in Chihuahua, Cd. Juarez. 

Jose was raised in Mexico, a hardworking man to provide the best for his family. He had the sweetest smile and was the most loving man. Jose had a passion for baseball, and played when he was younger in Mexico. His favorite team was the LA Dodgers. 

Jose loved making his unique wooden boxes to give out to his grandchildren. He enjoyed going outdoors and going fishing.

He is survived by his children: Hilda and Fernando Morales, Saint George, Utah, Sofia Mellish-Legg and Bill Legg, Caldwell, Idaho, Jose Castanon, Spokane, Washington, Santos and Angelina Garcia, Milton Freewater, Oregon, Patty Ringle, Spokane, Washington. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Daniel Morales, Shantell Morales-Dorantes, Fernando Jr Morales, Veronica Cenicenos, Ali Mellish, Binyamin Mellish, Daila Mellish, Daniel Mellish, Sofia Mellish-Garcia, Aaron Castanon, Jessica Castanon, Wesley Castanon, Riley Castanon, Carley Castanon, Cuahtemoc Garcia, Alejandro Garcia, Jose Charlie Garcia, Benjamin Garcia, Erica Nieva, as well as 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Benita, his sister, Maria Leandra, his wife, Maria Salome, and his grandkid, James Niva. 

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 4, 2023, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, Utah 

A mass will be held on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11:00 am, at the St. George Catholic Church, 259 W. 200 N St., Saint George, Utah

The family would like to thank special care nurse Hailee Mercier, Dr. Joseph Te, Dr. Michael Codiga, and hospice.

Arrangements are made under the direction of the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George, UT (435) 673-2454.
