Joseph Edward Burnard age 79 of Lake Township passed away Sunday, December 8, 2024 at Parkcliffe Memory Care in Northwood one day shy of his 52nd wedding anniversary. Joe was born to Harry and Carmelita (Simon) Burnard in Sylvania, Ohio. He was a 1963 graduate of Central Catholic High School and went on to serve our country in the U.S. Army Reserves. Joe married the love of his life Maryann (Wojton) on December 9, 1972, in the St. Mary Magdelene Catholic Church in Rossford. Joe and Maryann were active members of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Walbridge.
Joe received his Bachelor’s degree from the then Toledo University while working in the maintenance department at Mercy St. Charles Hospital, where he retired after 20 years of service. After leaving St. Charles Joe started a new career with Toledo Public Schools again in maintenance and retired in 2010 after decades of service. He also served as president of the Co-Op Toledo Credit Union. Joe was a real estate investor who bought houses to fix up for resell and invested in apartment complexes through this work he became an active board member and trustee for the Real Estate Investment Association (REIA).
Joe cherished his time as a scout leader when his boys were younger. One of his favorite parts of scouting leadership was when he got to plan and attend high adventure trips. He took pride in helping several area scouts achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Joe was an avid camper his entire life. His favorite pastimes included days spent fishing on the lake and fish fry’s and pizza pies for dinners. Joe loved to travel and was always up for adventure. Most of all Joe loved spending time with friends and family. Joe loved to tell stories around the fire and end the night with ice cream.
Joe is survived by his wife Maryann; sons Jonathan (Michelle), Jason, and Nicholas (Christina); grandchildren Travis, Liam, Lucas, and Allison; siblings James Burnard, Sister Margaret Burnard, Catherine (James) Zafirau, Sister Louise Burnard, and Alfred (Christine) Burnard. He was preceded in death by his parents and lifelong best friend Jim Myers.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Jerome Catholic Church on January 4, 2025 visitation at 10 a.m., Mass at 11 a.m. with luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions are appreciated to St. Jerome Catholic Church or The Boy Scouts.
