Betty Anne and family- just read the Vanderbilt mag. and saw Joe's passing last Oct. We are sad that we missed his memorial, but do know Jean and I treasured knowing you and him through the years and pray you will know he is at peace and you have peace that passes understanding. Big hugs, Hank and Jean Lesesne

It was with great sadness that I learned of Joe's passing. He was a great mentor of mine during several funding periods at the Clark Foundation, where he introduced me to US colleagues.
One of the great results of the Foundation's filarial grant series was the discovery of the symbiosis between filariae and Wolbachia endosymbionts, which was triggered by discussions during the meetings at Woods Hole that Joe organized, and which is now leading to new therapies against onchocerciasis.
I will miss him very much and am very grateful to him.
