His passion for photography. We shared the interest and he loved hearing about my adventures to photograph trains. He liked one of my images enough to turn it into a black and white image and print off for me. It's hanging in my home and thought of with appreciation. Will miss him!

Nous avions rencontré Joe à Paris . Assis dans un restaurant , voisins de table. Nous avons passé une soirée extraordinaire. Amateur de photo comme mon compagnon.Sa gentillesse, son humour nous ont marqué à jamais. Nous échangions sur Facebook et il projetait de venir en France nous voir avec son épouse. I am so sorry to hear the news of Joe's passing. I met Joe when I joined Parke-Davis; at that time, we were in different departments, but in the same building, and I always heard his laughter in the hallways. Joe enjoyed his work and had fun doing it. That was when I knew the grass was greener on the other side, and as luck would have it, after one of the many 'reorganizations', I was assigned to his team and started reporting to him. This was a life changing experience for me, he took me under his wing and mentored me, and I still consider him as one of my best bosses. I remember his laughter and his advice, but most of all I remember his coffee grinder; we had next-door offices and he loved his coffee every morning, and on some days, he would holler and ask me to join him for a mug.
My deepest condolences to Ann and the family. We will miss you, Joe!

I am so sorry to hear of Joe´s passing. I believe the first time I met Joe was when Jim and I were invited to join the " Gourmet Club" with other colleagues within Jim´s circle of friends at Parke Davis / Warner -Lambert /Pfizer . They had a history together! Joe always had a story or joke to tell that made our evening together so much fun. I remember Joe brought back lemon cello from Italy to share with the group...to clear the palet before (and) during the tirimisu that was served. Joe made the joke that the neighbors in the Hamby Cul de sac would all be saying " The Hamby´s had that group over again as evidenced by all the empty wine bottles put out for recycling" ( the rule was bring 2 bottles per couple)
After one of our meals we all went to the Veterans Park Ice Cube to cheer on Joe as he skated with a senior hockey team at about 1030pm. We gave him an "A" for effort!
In later years Jim and I would often run into Joe while shopping at Meijer. You could hear all the laughing -especially between he and Jim echoing the aisles of Meijer.
Those are a few of my memories of Joe. He and Ann were always a delight to be around. Joe always made me laugh. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Dear Ann, Joe, Matt and Nick,

Mrs. Cole and I are so deeply sorry to hear of Joe's passing. We will forever treasure our memories of him as a friend, coach, colleague and most importantly as a loving husband and proud father. Our youngest son Tom to this day still holds dear the memories of coach Joe not only for his compassionate mentoring and uncanny ability to make him laugh at the drop of a hat, but also for his ability to inspire those around him. Joe's witty jokes were always perfectly timed for a variety of situations and his ability to recall and deliver them was always flawless. We will miss our chance meetings at the Jackson Road Meijer store, which seemed almost weekly, and gave us a chance to catch up on both of our families. Rest in peace dear friend, for your life was a blessing to all those lucky enough to get to know you, and you will be missed beyond measure.

I first met Joe at Warner-Lamber Parke-Davis in the 80's and got to work more closely with him during his Charles River Days. Joe could always make current events and the latest news coming from our numerous team meetings and upper mgmt. decisions really come to life. Suddenly, the boring drug development meetings I had initially experienced in the room became way more interesting...and funny. During Charles River days, Joe would have to translate the directives coming to Ann Arbor from his CRL management. Sometimes his translations were accurate I´m sure, but we never quite believed what he said. I will miss the color that Joe added to our lives. Last, but not least, Joe will be remembered for his impressive scientific talents and contributions, adding significantly to W-L/P-D success story! Bob Sigler

Joe was always a beam of light straight from Heaven for everyone he met. I'll greatly miss our random run-ins at Meijer long after Pfizer had left Ann Arbor. Our son was less than a year old when we met 28 years ago, and as he grew up playing hockey Joe shared not only skates, but also the name of the best barber shop in Ann Arbor to get skates sharpened and the wise advice to bring blow pops to hockey game bleachers so when parents got out of control I could share "when you want to say something sour, put a sucker in your mouth instead". That was Joe, making every part of life warm. We'll miss you Joe.

I met Joe in high school. I remember Joe was a nice guy. He stepped lightly and always had a smile for each person he saw. Joe was always ready to spend a moment in friendship with an outreached hand and a firm shake. Joe looked for and found the good in each of us, and the good in the world found him. Rest in peace.

"Hey Big Ben, what time is it?". This was Joe needling my technician, named Ben, every other day as he entered my lab at Columbia. But Joe taught Ben and then my other technician Theresa to do tissue culture. He was a careful researcher, but nothing was too serious to not also couple it to a joke.
Over the decades (so many) I would see Joe every couple of years at a meeting. A new joke. a fishing story, and always an update on his children who were the focus of his life.
I will miss him.

Great guy.... gone too soon.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Joe's passing. I met Joe at my very first job in Ann Arbor, and I'll never forget the kindness he showed me, his sense of humor and those endless walks we took to the coffee room and back. I had reconnected with Joe last year, and was very much looking forward to many more visits to enjoy his wit and wisdom over a glass of bourbon. He will be missed. Ann, Joe jr. and family, our deepest condolences.

We´re so sorry to hear of Joe´s passing. We fondly remember great times vacationing in Michigan and the beach. We could always count on Joe for the best laughs. Our hearts go out to your family.
