Joseph Dickey Obituary

Family Matters Most
Joseph Dermot Dickey Jr. grew up with two older brothers in the Bronx, and the three siblings became more competitive the older they got. They sparred in tennis, basketball, volleyball and golf. Mr. Dickey, 50, who had settled down in Manhasset, was not only the best basketball player, his oldest brother admits, but was probably also the best liked of the three.

"He was extremely sociable," said Bill Dickey, 58. "Frankly, he was more easygoing and personable than me or my brother."

A managing director with Cantor Fitzgerald, Joe Dickey was also successful on Wall Street. But in his tight-knit Irish-American family, attributes as a husband and father ‹ in Joe Dickey's case to his wife, Irene, son Joseph, 17, and daughter Liz, 15 ‹ were "the mark by which we judge each other," Bill Dickey said.

His family's verdict was that Joe Dickey was exceptional on both counts, especially with the children. The last big family gathering, which also drew Walter, 55, the middle brother, was at the wedding of Bill Dickey's daughter last August in Adare Manor, Ireland. "We had a great time, all of us," Bill Dickey said. "We spent a lot of time playing golf."

I met Joe the summer after my freshman year of high school. Joe had just graduated from Fordham Prep and was a lifeguard in Ocean Beach. He was heading to the University of Wisconsin in the fall. What a truly amazing guy on so many different levels. His nickname for his brother Bill was puddin'. What a wonderful summer that was. Such a terrible tragedy that I don't know what else to say. God bless Irene, Joseph, Elizabeth, Bill, Walter and everyone who knew and loved him. Fondly, Lisa Steinberg Riverdale NY

I am sorry for your loss. Just always remember God has a plan for everyone and he is in a better place smiling down on you and your family. I am a student at Armuchee Middle School in Rome,Georgia. I was about three years old when this tragedy happend so I really do not remember the event of 9/11, but our educators here at my school are reminding us of it. On 9/11 this year our entire school did a balloon release and are in the progress of planting a garden in memory of the 9/11 victims and families just as yourself. Your family will always be in our prays.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Dickey family. I was pained to hear that the brother of one of my favorite professors had been lost on September 11, 2001. I can't imagine your loss, but your family's love and admiration for Joseph is beautifully evident in this tribute to him.

I received Mr. Dickey's name on a bracelet. While it was a tribute to one that lost his life tragicaly, it now holds a diffrent meaning for me after reading about his life, his family and his values.

Mr. Dickey made a difference in this world...and will continue to do so in the hearts and mind of those he's touched.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends...and to all who lost someone on September 11.

Irene, Joseph and Liz:

Our thoughts have been with you and remain with you always. (Marc saw the first plane hit from the elevated subway and could not comprehend, immediately, what he was seeing.)

Thank Joe for always taking our boys to the beach and for the twelve summers of afternoon get togethers.

Dear Joe,

I'll always treasure the times that we spent together at Fire Island, your house on Christmas Eve and dinners in the city with Irene and Billy. But, what always puts a smile on my face is how much fun you

would have when Billy was annoying Irene. These scenes always made you laugh; and I know that you are still laughing!

How fortunate we all are to have such wonderful memories. No message can express how valuable a friend you've been. You truly are special, and you have touched our lives. You leave us changed, and as our kids have turned into men, they will remember the gifts you gave them. Gifts such as: your love, time, and wisdom. Dear in our hearts, we will always remember you in Fire Island with a team of kids on their bikes loaded with sports equipment, CYO Basketball, and the early rise for the trip to DAC in the cold winter. What a great coach you've been. I will miss our conversations, your laughter and that funny little nervous scratch on the side of your head. You've accomplished so much but most life's finest your precious family. May god give them strength and courage to remember and love you forever.

Love,

Connie

Dear Mr. Dickey,

Your quiet kindness, sincerity, and warmth made you an unforgettable person. Each time I look at Joe and Liz, I am reassured that you will always be here with us. Their eyes and their smiles radiate your likeness. I miss you deeply and feel that a part of my family has been taken away from me. I will always remember you.

What a dazzling smile and warm soft eyes Joseph has in the picture you have shared with us. Such a smile and warm eyes must be a reflection of his heart. We are very sorry for your loss of Joseph. May his warm heart, his life and love live on in those who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by the warm memories of times shared with Joseph. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Joe,

I don't need to say goodbye because I feel you will always be with us. Although our friendship was recent, it felt as if it was in place since childhood. We shared the same views, opinions and values on many subjects. Whether it was on the golf course where we both struggled to get a handicap, or at dinner with the wives, we were on the same path. We could share our concerns and experiences in an honest fashion.

You and Irene have raised two wonderful children, Joseph and Liz, who are strong and independent thinkers, a tribute to both of you.

I will miss our conversations, I will miss you.

Manhasset lost too many good people, among them my good friend Kevin Cosgrove (who attended St. Mary's) and although I did not know Joseph, I wish I had met him, because he sounds like a wonderful person. I am so sorry he is no longer physically with you, but look for him in the beauty in the world - his spirit remains forever surrounding you, his beloved family. Peace and Love be with you.

It is with enormous sadness that I leave this note in memory of a childhood friend who was kindhearted and a gentleman in the truest sense. God must have wanted Joe nearer to Him -- He so often chooses the best among us to leave the earth too soon!

I send my thoughts and prayers to Joe's family at this most difficult time. May you find peace in knowing he is surely among angels as he was an angel among us.
