Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home and Crematory - Roswell on Mar. 4, 2026.
Joseph "Joe" D. Evans, 86, passed away on March 3, 2026, after a battle with cancer.
Joe was born on September 4, 1939, in Two Egg to Carter and Bertie Evans, who preceded him in death. He was the third oldest of four siblings, all of whom have also preceded him in death, including his twin brother, James. Joe was a devoted son and brother who took great pride in ensuring his parents and siblings were always cared for.
On June 30, 1959, Joe married the love of his life, Sandra C. Evans, who preceded him in death. Together they shared 65 wonderful years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and unwavering commitment.
Joe dedicated his career to working as a mechanic, a profession he truly loved. He began as a mechanic and service station attendant at a small gas station on Air Base Highway. He later worked at Valley Chevrolet and at JR Huff's Chevron Station on the corner of South Main Street and Poe Street. Joe eventually became owner and operator of Crossroads Garage, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. He was known for his strong work ethic, integrity, and willingness to help anyone in need.
Outside of work, Joe embraced life fully. He enjoyed taking children to 4-H playdays, square dancing, camping, traveling with his beloved wife, riding with the Goldwing Motorcycle Club, weekly trips to the casino, and teaching his grandson Trey how to ride dirt bikes and motorcycles. He was also a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
Joe is survived by his daughter, Becki Hammond (Phillip); his grandson, Trey Lynch (Cheree); his nephews, Darrell Evans (Tammy) and Roger Evans (Kim); his sister-in-law, Denise "Nesie" Mathis; his loyal Boston Terrier, Brad; and numerous nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home. At Joe's request, there will be no services.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to any Humane Society in Joe's memory.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Lovelace Hospital, Casa Maria, Hospice Care, and Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home for their compassionate care and support.
In Two Egg's quiet, sandy soil,
Where Carter and Bertie watched love toil,
A son was born with steady hands,
And a faithful heart for family and plans.
Joe journeyed west to Roswell's sky,
Where Sandra's smile first caught his eye.
On June the thirtieth, vows were made-
Sixty-five years that never frayed.
He turned his wrench with patient pride,
At roadside pumps and Main Street's side,
Through Valley Chevrolet and Chevron's flame,
To Crossroads Garage that bore his name.
He fixed more than engines worn and tired-
He mended spirits, inspired, admired.
A brother, a twin, a son so true,
He carried his family the whole way through.
From 4-H grounds to dancers' squares,
From Goldwing rides to camping chairs,
He taught young hands to shift and steer,
And kept his loved ones always near.
Though March winds came and called him home,
No more through earthly roads to roam,
His well-worn tools lie still at last-
But love, like engines, is built to last.
And somewhere roads run smooth and wide,
With Sandra waiting by his side.
