Dr. J. Van Fenstermaker, 92, passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of profound contributions to the field of economic history. A professor, chair of the Economics Department at Towson University, and historian, he was best known for his groundbreaking work on the history of American banking, including his highly regarded book The Development of American Commercial Banking: 1782–1837.

Dr. Fenstermaker's academic journey began at the University of Illinois, where he earned his PhD and authored his dissertation, which would become the foundation of his most influential work. He taught at several universities, including The University of Mississippi, The Johns Hopkins University, and Towson University, where he served as Chair of the Economics Department before retiring as Professor Emeritus.

His research focused on the intersection of banking, monetary policy, and the economic effects of significant events in U.S. history. He was deeply committed to scholarly rigor and was widely respected for his archival research and intellectual curiosity.

In retirement, Dr. Fenstermaker restored antiques and renovated three historic homes in Baltimore. He then moved to Tennessee to be closer to his children, where he continued to enjoy spending time with family and golfing. He is survived by his wife, Debely Fenstermaker, and his five children: Van, Joanne, Kylie, Vivian, and Murray. He is also survived by four grandchildren.

Dr. Fenstermaker's passing marks the end of a remarkable career dedicated to the advancement of knowledge. He is survived by colleagues, former students, and the countless scholars who have been inspired by his work.

A private ceremony will be held in his honor.
