It has been more than twenty years since Joe and I spoke and I still recall his tone. He was a good and kind man who valued his customer relationships. He is deserving to be forever in our memories.

Dear Joe "Joey" -- While I think of you every time I see an image of the towers, a sparkling blue sky, or hear a low flying plane, I am lucky to have other memories of your life. Archery in the backyard in Hycliff, picking wild raspberries, your mice, your "cool" collections and beautiful home. Visiting with Grandpa and Gippy (the original dog lover!). Sunday dinners on the fieldstone terrace. Blasting "Rhapsody in Blue". Dartmouth. Patricia. Sitting on the deck at my mom & dad's house with Fu and Suzy. You were always there for our family, and we fondly remember you and Pat. The anniversary of 9/11 always finds me a little sadder than I expect to be. I know I speak for Mom, Betsy and Anne when I say we love you and miss you. We are PROUD of your heroism 5 years ago today. Our thoughts, hearts and prayers are with you today, and every day. Your loving cousin. Mary

I remember now the cousin that I never knew and all those who lost their lives on that September day. How I wish it had not happened and all were here today, close to all their loved ones. The loss is so traumatic by the way they had to leave, and we will remember each of them forever and pray no more will grieve.

God rest the souls of Mr. and Mrs. Flounders. May the peace of God house the souls of those left behind. I lost my sister, Beverly Curry in the WTC attack.

I also did not find out about Joe and Pat until the year anniversary. After some investigation I learned we were distant cousins. On behalf of the entire Flounders Family I want to thank everyone for their kind words.

It's been over a year since 9/11, yet I have just learned of Joe's death--I am so saddened.
Joe and I dated when he was a Freshman at Dartmouth. He was one of the most gentle, caring human beings I have ever met. We spent many hours together talking, laughing. He wrote me many beautiful letters, and visited me and my family in Marblehead. We lost touch after I got married, although we did talk on the phone once when he was working downtown and I was at graduate school at Fordham. I have only fond memories of Joe, and I mourn his passing and send my deepest sympathy to his remaining family.
With greatest respect, Elizabeth Shannon Weiss

A LAMENT AT GROUND ZERO
SEPTEMBER 11, 2001
Underneath the shrouding stone,
Where you lie in Death alone,
Can you hear me calling, calling,
In a wild hot gush of woe?
Tis for you my tears are falling –
For you, my comrades all.
Hope of Mine and Hope of Me
Take our honor to your keeping
Bare your swift blade to the Dawn
Freedom’s voice hath roused from
Sleeping
For you, my comrades all.
So I dreamt the Day had come
All the winds are blowing gusty
with a storm of tears
Feel you not the battle-anger
shake the Nations of the world?
While amid the stress and clangor
Still my Flag is there unfurled
Were you here, my comrades fallen
This oblivion had not been
Thus I mourn you pining, pining,
For the gallant heart that lies within
Whose life was as a true star shining
To you, my comrades all
Pat, Joe, Mike and I think of you daily. You are dearly missed.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Joseph. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
