Jospeh Leslie Helle, age 80, of Mt. Carroll, IL, passed away January 31, 2026 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, in Savanna, IL. Interment will take place at Savanna Township Cemetery, in Savanna Illinois. His family wishes to sincerely thank the staff of Pinnacle Place and Big Meadows for the kindness and care they showed to Joe.
Born February 6, 1945, in Savanna, Joe was the son of Walter and Alice (Williams) Helle. He grew up in the community he would cherish his entire life, graduating from Savanna High School with the Class of 1963.
After high school, Joe went to work alongside his father in the family’s logging and pallet business, dedicating 28 hardworking years to the trade. He later spent 12 years driving truck for JB Hunt Trucking, then finished his working years as head of maintenance at the Campbell Center in Mt. Carroll, serving there for eight years.
Joe was blessed with a remarkable musical talent. Though largely self taught, he could pick up nearly any instrument and make it sing; guitar, harmonica, piano, organ, banjo, were some of his favorites. He played with the Moony Hollow Band and several other groups over the years, sharing his gift with friends, family, and anyone lucky enough to hear him.
On July 1, 1983, Joe married Patricia Syndram, the love of his life. Together they shared a deep bond through music, as he would play, and she would sing. Through their marriage, Joe gained four step-sons, but the word “step” was never part of his vocabulary. From there came the grandchildren and great grandchildren, who became the center of his world. Family meant everything to him. He even stepped forward to raise one of his granddaughters, a role he considered to be a blessing.
Joe was the soft hearted grandpa who always said yes, who catered to every want and whim, who delighted in spoiling the little ones while Pat kept a slightly firmer hand. He loved telling stories, especially those about his grandchildren and their sweet, silly, or mischievous adventures.
Joe will be remembered for his kindness and love of his family. He is survived by step sons, Dave Syndram, Victor Preston, Vincent Preston, and James Preston; grandchildren, Jamie (Brandon) Urban, Rebecca (Isaac) Ritchie, and Tiffany Preston; seven great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and three nieces, Theresa, Kathy, and Brenda. Joe is preceded in death by his parents Walter and Alice; wife, Patricia; and siblings, Vernon Helle, Janice Mills, Stanley Helle, and Burnette Helle.
