Obituary
Joseph Leo Hood, age 76, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, in Warren, New Jersey.
Born and raised in
Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Joseph carried with him the values of faith, family, and service that shaped his life from an early age. He was a graduate of Trinity High School in Shiremanstown, Pennsylvania, and went on to further his education at Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland, where he graduated in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He later earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1976. His commitment to learning became the foundation of a lifelong career dedicated to education.
Joseph devoted his professional life to the field of education, particularly in the advancement of special education. He played a meaningful role in helping to develop special education programs in New Jersey and served with distinction as a Director of Special Education. He also held positions as Superintendent of Schools in both New Jersey and in
Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. Throughout his career, he served in numerous respected institutions, including Columbia High School, Ridgewood High School, Highland Park High School, and Freehold High School in New Jersey; the Mechanicsburg Area School District in Pennsylvania; and St. Mary's School in Platteville, Wisconsin. His work reflected not only leadership, but a deep compassion for students and families, ensuring that every child was given the opportunity to succeed.
Throughout his life, Joseph lived in several communities, each move guided by his desire to remain close to family. After growing up in Mechanicsburg, he settled in Clinton, New Jersey, where he raised his family. Later, he and his wife moved to Platteville, Wisconsin, before ultimately returning to New Jersey. Each chapter of his life was rooted in the same priority, being near those he loved most.
Faith was the cornerstone of Joseph's life. In his early years, he was a devoted member of Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in
Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. His involvement in the Church was not passive. It was central to who he was. He believed deeply in service, prayer, and supporting the mission of the Church. He served as Head of CCD in multiple parishes, guiding young people in their faith formation, and while living in Platteville, Wisconsin, he also led a church choir, sharing his love of music in service to his parish community. Most recently, he was a faithful parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church in
Martinsville, New Jersey.
Joseph was especially devoted to supporting the Society of Jesus Christ the Priest, an international organization dedicated to the spiritual support, encouragement, and sanctification of Catholic priests. His charitable contributions to this mission reflected his profound respect for the priesthood and his desire to strengthen the spiritual life of the Church worldwide.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and his deep faith, Joseph was a man who found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved working on crossword puzzles and sudoku, always enjoying the challenge of a good problem to solve. He had a well-known sweet tooth, with chocolate ice cream being a particular favorite. He was the master of the classic Dad joke, delivering them with impeccable timing and a wit that could make anyone smile. He was always impeccably dressed and was known for pairing a well-tailored suit with a baseball cap, a signature look that reflected both his polish and his personality.
Above all else, Joseph's greatest joy was his family. He loved deeply and wholeheartedly. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy Hood, in 2017, whom he cherished throughout their life together. He was also predeceased by four siblings, his sister Patricia Hood, who passed away in childhood before Joseph was born, his brother William E. Hood, his sister Mary Louise Oed, and his sister Dolores M. Campbell.
Joseph is survived by his four loving children, Matthew Hood and his wife Caryn, Rev. Jared Hood, Kirsten Checchio and her husband Robert, and Carly Hood. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Josephine Nancy, Robert, Caroline, Evangeline, Joshua, Ryleigh, Bernadette Nancy, and Zachary. He is further survived by his siblings, Barbara Stevenson and Dennis Hood. Each of them was a source of immense pride and joy in his life.
