To Mrs. Howe and the Howe Family:
I was extremely saddened to hear yesterday of the passing of Mr. Howe. I was fortunate to have Mr. Howe as an instructor for Building Construction class during the 1986-87 school year and he was more than a good instructor, he was a great man.
He always encouraged me and was the epitome of a Virginia Gentleman. I remember during her visit to UVA, my mother always asked how Mr. Howe was doing as she was very appreciative of the encouragement that he always exhibited towards me.
While reading of his passing and life story, I found myself remembering Mr. Howe quite fondly as I thought about his stories and anecdotes, and wish that I had been able to speak with him if only to let him know that whatever success I may have had as an architect, I will always owe a part of that to him.

Dear Virginia and family,
I share your loss of a wonderful gentleman. Our families go back many years, from his parents living next to my grandmother on Chestnut Street, to their retirement apartment at Oleander Court, where my late mother kept in regular touch. Joe was most helpful in my getting settled my first year at Virginia, and we kept in touch through my Army years at the Pentagon. I pray that God's peace surrounds you in knowing that Joe is beyond suffering and reunited with more friends than ever.

I was fortunate to be one of Mr. Howe's student at the A-School. I so much appreciated his enthusiasm, energy, and sense of humor. The University of Virginia has lost a great professor!

Though the time came to say good-bye, oh how we will miss that smile and reassuring devotion to those blessed to share Joe's path. Oh, the stories he will tell about Heaven next we meet!
