In memory of
Charlie Gili
February 3, 2023
Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Joseph J. Duenas US Army Private 1st Class.
We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.
We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Joe was such a kind soul I remember very few of my former Employees mostly the bad ones and the Best ones I Remember Joe He was one of the Best. Although the only time I spent with him was at work I considered him my friend. He was so eager to please everyone, so helpful. I Remember how bad Joe wanted to join the Army. How much pain he was willing to endure to remove the tats so he could Serve in the Army. I remember the smile on his face when he finally got in. And I remember driving down the 202 and hearing on the Radio Mesa Soldier Joe Duenas died today near Kirkuk
I had to pull off the freeway ( It is hard to see thru tears) it hit me hard so I can only imagine how hard it was for his wife and family. I remember Joe every Veterans day, Memorial day, Armed Forces day and every time I hear of a soldiers death, and every time I meet a Veteran. I have always thanked Veterans for their service. But, how do you thank them for the ultimate Sacrifice. I can only give my heartfelt condolences to his family and Remember. Rest in Peace My Friend
You are missed.

I remember "Joey" as a little boy. He was one of my best friends in elementary school. I remember him as being pure positivity. Even when he was in a bad situation he would somehow find a way to make the best out of it. Though I havent seen him in probably 20 years, he left a big impression on me, and as I searched for him on the internet to see how he is doing I was deeply saddened to find out about his passing. Just one look at this picture and I knew it was him. Joey from Hayward, that was a good friend to me even when I didnt deserve it; who was unabashedly kind to everyone around him.I wanted to contact him to tell him that I missed him and that his friendship meant a lot to me in my younger years, but I will instead add my name to the list of people that are shocked that he of all people was taken from us so early, but I will resolve in my personal life to be a little more kind and compasionate like Joey, so a part of who he was will continue to grow and thrive on this earth. Rest in peace my friend. Matt

I can't believe that tomorrow, March 30, 2011 will be 5 years. I could not have made it through these years without the support received from everyone. Joey was my first son and the most precious gift from above, where he now resides. I live with a huge void in my heart and treasure each and every memory. I was truly blessed to have such a wonderful son, with such a BIG heart. I know that one day we will be together again, until then I am thankful for all the signs/messages I have received that you are there. Love Mom

It has been 3 years since I lost my son-in-law Joey, you would think as time goes by it heals the pain, but it never does. There are so many great memories of Joey and it just keeps a smile on my face when I think of them. There is a saying: "After a tragic event, it's so hard to be happy again. Cherish the things you have on earth, rather than dwell on what you don't have. And don't be afraid to cry".
I miss you my son, Love you so much, MOM

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

It didn't take much time for me to figure out who I could count on . you were always on top of the game .you were alway ready to help me or any other soldier out .you were a person that I could always count on or even have small talk with when we were haveing a hard time .Thank you for being there as a friend and a fellow soldier .you always carried your load and then some. The first platoon that we knew misses you.You were a good example for every one. I still serve and I strive to give a good example for the new guys much like what you were for me. Hopefully this is not the last conversation that we will ever have. Until then ,peace man.

I remember when Shawna was living with me, she would tell me about a guy who liked her a lot. Although she liked him, too, she wasn't sure if she should take the leap and pursue a "real relationship" with him. I kept urging her to trust her heart, and although I had yet to meet him, everything she told me about him seemed like he was "the one". Joe was a good guy, obviously in love with my cousin and she with him. He was easy going and likable - definitely gained the admiration of my boys as well as mine. He made the ultimate sacrifice for this country. I am very sorry for everyone's loss, especially Shawna and his parents.

I can still hear his voice when he would call. All he had to say was "Hi Mom". How can you ask your son "how are you", even though he would just say "fine". We of course would always talk of family and that would keep us laughing. I miss that voice and I miss my son-in-law terribly. I feel helpless seeing my daughter hurting and all I can do is watch through her healing process. But our Joey would not want us to be sad, he would want us to celebrate his life and his laughter...and man did he have a funny sound when he would laugh! I cherish my son-in-law, his bravery and I love him for loving my daughter so much. I miss you Joey and you are always in my heart sweetheart.

To the family of Joe. I am saddened that you have joined a small but proud group of Gold Star parents. We are all honored that our children gave the ultimate sacrifice but the pain is overwhelming. It is against nature and will, I am sorry to say, live with you forever. As you try to come to grips with the loss of Joseph, do not be surprised at the emotional roller coaster you will be riding. But, you are not alone. Although none of us want to be here, we are because our boys are heroes. We are because they were strong beyond comprehension. We are a strong group because we have also given the ultimate sacrifice of the giving of our child. I can not think of any pain relieving words to say except he is a hero and will forever be remembered as one of the few, the proud, a United States military hero. You are also one of the few, the proud and a United States military parent. That is something that no one can ever take away from you, never.
With deepest sympathies,

To the Family of Pfc. Joseph J. Duenas:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost our son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
