I want to offer my deepest condolences to the Fenty family for the loss of Joe in 2006, during combat operations in Afghanistan.
I served with Joe in the 1st Bn 508th IN (ABN), Ft. Kobbe, Panama. In 1987, we were both 2LTs, and we arrived to the battalion on the same day, in the same aircraft into Howard AFB. Joe was a great guy and I always enjoyed speaking with him. He was a very smart, soft spoken guy, but when it came to soldiering Joe was all business and one could tell he loved the profession. If my memory serves me correctly, Joe was assigned to Charlie Company, as a rifle platoon leader. Over the next year, Joe excelled as a platoon leader, and because of his leadership, tactical skill set and fitness, he was chosen to be the Scout Platoon Leader. This was a highly coveted position reserved for only the best LTs in the battalion. Joe was an Airborne Ranger and excelled as scout platoon leader, and further honed his skills as a tremendous leader and tactician.
Again if my memory serves me correctly, Joe departed Panama, as he was selected to serve as a rifle platoon leader in a Ranger Battalion, located in the US. Joe's reputation was outstanding and he was highly respected and liked among the enlisted and officer ranks of the airborne battalion at Ft. Kobbe. I lost track of Joe after he departed Panama, and only recently learned of his passing. It's obvious reading Joe's biography, that he went on to have a distinguished career as an Army infantry officer reaching the rank of LTC commanding an infantry battalion. It's not surprising to me that Joe gave everything for his country, leading from the front. That's how warriors lead, and Joe exemplified this as a true warrior.
Again my deepest condolences to the Fenty family.

To the Family of LTC Fenty:
My condolences. Though I never met Joseph, there is a special bond among men and women of the military - - no matter the branch. After recently meeting his mother,"Charlee", I visited this Guest Book and what a collective testament to this officer. A great soldier, officer, commander, son, relative, friend and especially, husband and father. To Joseph and the many other men and women who have fallen, those whom I've visited at Arlington and in places like Walter Reed Hospital: I offer a salute!

I don't know if you remember me or my wife Shelley. Joe was my first company commander and the one willing to give a non Ranger 2Lt a chance a leading a line platoon and how you welcomed Shelley to the company and battalion. I was just thinking about Joe this weekend and all the other that have sacrificed.

Dear Kristen,
You will not likely remember me, but I met you at the Fort Drum Inn the day you and Joe arrived in 2005. Joe had been my assignment officer for over two years and I had always been impressed by his cheerfulness and professionalism. I was happy to finally meet the man and personality behind the voice. I remember watching the 3/10 BCT activation ceremony that fall, seeing Joe at command events, and seeing him regularly during morning PT sessions as his headquarters was just a few blocks from mine. I had returned barely a month from my deployment to Iraq and had just commemorated a monument to the Soldiers I had lost there when I heard the tragic news about Joe. I changed command a day or two later and departed before Joe's memorial ceremony, which I regret missing.
I pray for God's blessings, comfort, and care for you and your Family. And I also thank the Lord for having made a man like Joe who set such a superb example for his Soldiers, his peers, and his Nation.

You were barely a month old - 29 days I believe - when we met. I think of the joy you must be bringing to your Mommy, and to all of those who knew your Daddy so brave and true. Give Mommy a special kiss and twirl as you celebrate your birthday, Lauren. We think of you all the time and thank God for the gift of meeting you and your Mom that fateful day in May.

I was an IOBC Classmate of LTC Joe Fenty and subsequently on to Ranger School. I learned of his death from one of his soldiers as I was returning to OIF from mid-tour leave in November 2006. This soldier spoke of a great soldier, officer and commander. That was the Joe that I knew. A tragic loss. On Memorial Day 2008, I offer my deepest sympathy to Joe's family.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Joseph but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I want to say I am so sorry to hear this news about Joe. He was a regular guy in his youth, a great kid. We were blessed to have had him in our graduating class. You could always remember his sincere and warm smile. he was a true gentleman in HS. I went up to visit Connequot and learned that he was killed while serving our country. I was upset. Again, Joe was the kindest, sweetest, most respectable young man. He should be honored for his courage. He had grace and dignity. he was brave. He was different than others. Truly a better person than most. I will say a prayer. I was just extremely shocked that such an extraordinary guy passed. My deepest sympathy to his family. Everyone from school remembered his sweet smile.

I visited Joe's gravesite today and those of some of the Soldiers in my BN that I lost in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 as I attended another funeral of a young NCO today in Arlington. I hadn't seen Joe since our days in Alaska together but when I heard about his death, it brought back all those memories like it was yesterday. I wish you all peace and happiness. You should feel comfort in knowing that Joe is surrounded by fellow heroes in a place of honor. His sacrifice as a leader of Soldiers had an impact on so many lives and you should be proud that he lived a great life of service to others.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

To the Fenty family,
I am truly sorry for your loss. I served under LTC Fenty and can say without hesitation he was the finest officer I have ever met. He truly cared for all his soldiers and always lead from the front. His technical and tactical knowledge always seemed to amaze me. He was truly a brilliant man. All of us who served under him had the deepest respect for him. He would never ask you to do something he himself was not willing to do. The military award I most cherish is a coin he personally gave to me in private for a mission I completed under his guidance. I will never forget training with him at FT Drum and the way he pushed us all to be better soldiers. He truly made our unit great and set us up for succes on our deployment. His loss hit us hard and he is truly missed by us all. He was the greatest commander I have ever served with. Gallantly Forward!

Dear Kristen
Ali and I were shocked to learn recently of the awful news about Joe. Please accept our heart-felt sympathy at your, and Lauren's dreadful loss.
Although it seems such a long time since we served together at Sandhurst, Ali and I remember you both with much fondness. In particular, I shall long remember the time Joe and I spent in West Point and New York during the Spring of 1995. It was a memorable visit and I recall vividly Joe's happiness when the British team, which he had trained so expertly, beat all-comers in the Sandhurst Competition at USMA! A few years after we left Sandhurst I worked with another Army Ranger, Mark Childress. Mark and I used to chat fondly of Joe, and of the high regard in which he was held by all who knew him.
I shall remember Joe as a model officer - totally professional, highly principled, able, completely honest and utterly determined. But, above all, I shall remember him as just a great bloke.
Ali joins me in extending our condolences to you, Lauren and your entire family at this most difficult time. God bless.

Mrs Fenty,
I am Major Mahatma Williams from the Jamaica Defence Force. I was a student and great admirer of the man I knew as Captian JJ Fenty at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. I am deeply saddened tonight, since I was searching for your husband to tell him thanks in person, for the job he did and the Officer he made out of me.
I am currently studyng at the Marine Corps University, Quantico. I have been asking all the US Army persons of JJ. I decided to do an internet search..
I am so sorry; JJ, though we lost touch when I was deployed to Haiti, I spoke of him and thought about him and how he built me up and guided me.
I dont know what has been done or said thus far, but a hero such as this cannot be simply placed in the earth.
In the military we meet alot of persons from different countries. When we part, we retire to our own wars and conflicts and so fate hold us as we journey. As I continue my journey I wish to tell you that, my love for JJ is added to yours and will last forever. His name will live with my sons ans his sons and their sons. He is a part of my history.
Now I wish to say what I am unable to say because no amount of words can express what we feel.
My prayers are with you and your family, may God bless you with happiness and peace. He gives us his precious gifts to enjoy for a while and then he retrieves them to his bossom. God has retrieved one of his precious gifts.

Dear Kristin and sweetest child,
I have not forgotten you for a moment since our meeting on May 23rd after your husband's burial at Arlington. I have been back several times, since we live only 2.5 hours away. Having just received a postcard that the monuments are in, I will likely go back this week.
I pray for you daily, and the strength of the ginkgo tree to grow and shade LTC Fenty's grave as your precious little one endeavors to come for many years.
Little did I know how much more difficult this would be as the reality all sets in. I did, really, but I couldn't imagine it as a mother. I experienced this as a child losing my father, but it is entirely different being the mother.
And your grief, as a wife, I'm sure is altogether different, too, I'm sure. Be sure that there are many loving your husband, and missing him, Kristin, and that his men in Afghanistan realize his absence.
We left flowers at our last visit to Arlington; I'll send you a photo when they come back - just to remind you of the love that flows in section 60. The gentleman named Tom who writes to you, he is a minister to the spirits of our sons and husbands, too. He cleans the monuments with wet-wipes and prays for us each time he visits.
Again, God be with you and your precious child.

I did not know LTC Fenty personally, but by being on the 3rd Brigade staff I knew that he was well respected as a commander, both by his soldiers and his peers.
May God bring you and your daughter Lauren peace and comfort as you continue to love and remember Joe.

Kristen,
I am very sorry for your loss. I am honored to have known and worked for your husband in two different units. He is the main reason the 3-71 recon is as good as they are. He was deeply respected and loved by all those that served with him. Know that we will never let is memory die and that we are always there for you and your daughter.

Dear Mrs. Fenty,
I am Ross Berkoff's mother. I met your husband at Ft. Drum before they left for Afghanistan. Ross tried many times for us to meet LTC Fenty. Finally we saw his car and went in to say Hello. Your husband told me that Ross and him would be "attached to at the hip" and he would take care of him. Ross loved him, respected him, and spent many hours talking about what they had done together. I still have no words that fully can express my gratitude for the impact your husband had on my son and my family. He will be so missed. What a loss to this needy world we live in. Looking forward to meeting you one day soon

Dear Kristen,
I can't get you and your family off my mind. The ceremony was moving, poignant, up-lifting, and special in every way. It will be difficult for you and Lauren but you, at least, will have each other, buoyed by your wonderful family and support group.
God be with you.
Love, Mary Ann

I am the mother of a Fort Drum, 10th Mountain, 3rd BCT soldier on deployment in Afghanistan.
I want to offer your entire family my heartfelt prayers and condolences on the loss of Joseph! My heart aches for the pain you are going through. Cherish and hold close the memories of Joseph. May God grant you peace in knowing what a special man Joseph was.
I talked to my son on Monday, and he expressed his sadness about what had happened to his “battle buddies” and wished for me to convey his condolences as well. He promises to carry on with the job that Joseph and the others were doing.
Know that your pain is shared by many military families across this nation. We know and we care.

pours through and shines down

they are happy…..”
Thank you giving all of us in this nation the ultimate sacrifice that a family can make in order to preserve our precious freedom!

To the Family of Lt. Col. Joseph J. Fenty:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
