Joseph Philip McCarthy

Portsmouth, RI - Joseph Philip McCarthy, 81, of 39 Bayview Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI. He was the husband of JoAnn E.(Kelly) McCarthy. Born in Lynn, MA on February 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Joseph Peter and Mary (Carrol) McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy served fro 24 years in the Navy Reserves, retiring as Chief. He worked as an electrical engineer. He was a member of the Sea Bees and an active member of the AOH in Peabody, MA for many years. Phil resided in Peabody MA, Rutland VT, Andover NH and Portsmouth RI. His favorite times in life were spent with his family at his summer cottage on Merrymeeting Lake and skiing in the White and Green mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont (God's Country). He will be remembered for his love of friends and his willingness to help all that he met, stranger or friend.. Besides his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his sons, Shawn P. McCarthy and his wife Lisa of Portsmouth, RI, Michael J. McCarthy and his wife Jodie of Rutland, VT, Patrick E. McCarthy and his wife Julie of Northborough, MA, his grandchildren, Rian McCarthy, Ellie McCarthy, Lily McCarthy, Kaitlin McCarthy and Shaun McCarthy. A Graveside service will be held at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Lynn, MA on September 9, 2010, at 11AM. Immediately following a luncheon celebrating Phil's life will be held at Spinelli's Route One South, Lynnfield, MA.
