Joseph Richard Merricks, 42, of 19 Courtney Terrace, Altavista died Thursday, April 27, 2023. He was the husband of Brittany Spilker Merricks for 15 years.
He was born June 20, 1980, in Lynchburg, a son of Betty Jane Feguson Merricks and the late Richard Lee Merricks. He worked as a transport driver for Foster Fuels and served as a member of the Altavista Fire Company. Aside from Joey's work, he enjoyed camping with family and friends. He was known for his picking spirit and boisterous laugh.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by his brother, Jason Merricks and his wife, Tanya of Altavista; his sister, Dawn Johnson and her husband, Jermey of
Ponte Vedra, FL; his brothers-in-law, Cody Spilker and his wife, Ashley of Hurt, and Brand Spilker and his wife, Rinette of Derider, LA; his mother-in-law, Kathy Spilker; his nieces and nephews, Ethan, Evan, Linus, Oliver, Gracie, Rylen, Haley, and Hannah; and his beloved dog, Max.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the Altavista Fire Company by the Rev. Chris Brooks.
The family will receive friends following the service at the Altavista Fire Company and other times at the residence.
