Montpelier, VTJoseph T Mureta, 96, of Montpelier passed away so peacefully on October 29, 2025 at the Gary residence, "Clara's Garden", where Joe resided for the past six years.
He was born August 5, 1929 in Barre, Vermont. Joe was a graduate of Montpelier High School's class of 1946. He was first employed by the New England Telephone Company. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict in 1951-1952 and was stationed in Germany. After his military service, he joined his father, Steve Mureta, in the granite business at Montpelier Granite Works, which Steve founded. Joe assumed control of the company upon Steve's death in 1977. He was active in the granite business for over 62 years, finally retiring at the age of 87.
In 1954, Joe married the love of his life, Theresa Allain, who died in 2019.
They had 6 wonderful children together. Joe and Theresa made their home on Town Hill Road in Montpelier for over 50 years. Joe's true passion in life was hunting and fishing. He was a definite outdoorsman who loved being in the woods with his sons, his hunting dogs and his close friends. He was a devoted husband and father and had fond memories of Joe's Pond in Danville where the family spent most of their summers together. Joe was part owner of Consolidated Memorials. He was a member of the Montpelier Elks Club, Canadian Club, Barre Gun Club and a devoted member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Montpelier. Joe was a man of great faith and he was fortunate to have his relative, Father Leopold Bilodeau regularly visit the Gary Residence to give him communion. The family would like to thank Dawn Palowski and the entire team at the Gary Residence for making their father's last few years good ones. We are ever so grateful. He will be dearly missed.
Joe was predeceased by his wife, Theresa, his precious daughter, Lynda Aldrich, his sister Betty LeRoy and his mother and father, Ann and Steve Mureta. He leaves behind 5 children, Gary Mureta of Burlington, Daniel Mureta of Montpelier, Brenda Aiken of Burlington, Douglas Mureta of Barre and Michelle Parker of Danville and a sister Mary Parke of Chillicothe, Ohio, 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Per Joe and Theresa's wishes, their ashes will be interred together at the family memorial in Green Mount Cemetery in Montpelier in the spring when all family members will be able to attend. A Mass of Christian burial will precede the committal service at St. Augustine's Catholic Church over which Father Leopold Bilodeau will preside.
