Joseph Porter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Duyck & VanDeHey Funeral Home - Forest Grove on Mar. 11, 2026.
Joseph "Joe" Roswell Porter was born in Hillsboro, OR on September 22, 1954. He was the eighth of nine children born to Edward and Agnes (Crunican) Porter. He was raised in Forest Grove and graduated from Forest Grove High School in the Class of 1973. During High School, Joe was an accomplished wrestler.

Immediately after high school, Joe continued his education first at Oregon State University, then Mt. Hood Community College, Portland State University as well as University of Portland and earned his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.

Joe used his Professional Engineering Certification at Tektronix, Wacker Siltronics, Komatsu, IDT and Jireh, working in high tech, developing lifelong friendships and travelling the world until his retirement in 2012. His travels took him to Japan, Singapore, Germany, and all around the United States.

Joe met his future wife, Della "Sue" Bownes, while she was working, picking berries on his dad's farm as a child. The two reconnected while Joe was in college; and after a short courtship, they were married on July 21, 1979. They made their first home in Forest Grove and later moved to Hillsboro where they raised their five children. Joe was widowed in 2022.

Joe loved spending time outside. Whether camping, hiking, or daily walks, he loved being outdoors, especially fishing. He also enjoyed traveling and RV'ing with Sue. His favorite destinations were the Oregon Coast and Arizona. Joe and Sue were "snowbirds", visiting Arizona annually during the winters. In addition to these activities, Joe loved gardening, but most of all, spending time with his grandkids.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife Sue, his parents; Edward and Anges, and five siblings; Bruce Porter, Paul Porter, Steve Porter, Bill Porter and Vincent Porter.

He is survived by his five children and spouses: Ryan and Holly Porter of Athol, Allan and Lindsey Porter of Forest Grove, Katie Porter of North Plains, John and Brittany Porter of Forest Grove, and Michael Porter and Haleigh Newidouski of Cornelius, three siblings and their spouses: Charlie and Joann Porter of Newberg, Sandy and Mike Atkins of North Carolina, Beth and Adel Sharaf of Portland, and eleven grandchildren: Ethan, Lilly, Gaven, Madelyn, Nikki, Bella, Big Levi, Wyatt, Levi, Theodore, and Franklin, and many nieces and nephews.

Joe and I became friends while working a Wacker Siltronic. Being both engineers, we could talk for hours about technical subjects. We both would spend time RVing around the pacific Northwest and Snowbirding in Arizona. We also learned to kayak in the Tualitin River. We also flew radio Controlled airplanes at Fly-Aways rc club. My wife and I will always miss Joe as we were planning on fishing together this Summer.
