Joseph Proto, 90, of Manchester, passed away Friday, March 6, 2026, at Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Born in Montclair, he moved to Manchester in 1955, where he built a life rooted in hard work, family, and service to his community.

Joseph worked for the Ocean County Road Department as an engineer for more than 40 years before retiring in 2011. In addition to his public service, he owned and operated Joe Proto House Movers from the 1950's to 1979, moving many homes from Paterson to Ocean County.

A talented woodworker and skilled craftsman, Joseph was known for his remarkable ability to build and fix just about anything. He built numerous homes for family and friends, constructed the original gazebo in Huddy Park, and even built a swimming pool-always generously sharing his talents with those around him.

Joseph's impact extended far beyond his craftsmanship. He helped co-found Manchester Little League and served as an umpire for many years, touching the lives of thousands of young athletes and families in the community. In recognition of his dedication and service, Ocean County issued a proclamation through Commissioner Joe Vicari declaring a "Joe Proto Day."

He also enjoyed collecting Hess trucks and Ty Beanie Babies, hobbies that brought him great joy over the years.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Charlotte A. Proto; his children Michael Proto and his wife Karen, Janice Miller and her husband Bob, Charlotte Martin and her husband Alex, and Dee Bardes and her husband Phil; and his daughter-in-law Lynda Proto.

He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Bobby, Tara, Jeff, Danielle, Michael, Jaime, Jay, Amanda, Alex, John, Joseph III, Philip, Michelle, and Alicia; 22 great-grandchildren: Coral, Kelly, Kylee, Samatha, Jacob, Tamara, Peter, Abe, Quinn, Henry, Michael, Aubrey, Maci, Callie, Neyland, Miles, Sienna, Joni, Brinley, Sophia, Serena, and Angelo; and 4 great-great-grandchildren: Myles, Levi, Anthony, and Ian along with many beloved nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by his beloved son, Joseph C Proto Jr.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a 6:00 PM service, at Oliverie Funeral Home, 2925 Ridgeway Road, Manchester.
