Joseph (Joe) R. Schuster, formerly of Bernard,Iowa passed away on February 1, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on May 17, 1936, Joe enjoyed a long life filled with simple pleasures.
A faithful member of the Sacred Heart of Filmore in Bernard, Iowa, he later found a spiritual home at St. James Catholic Church in Liberty, Missouri. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
An accountant by trade, Joe enjoyed reading books and newspapers. After serving in the Army (1960-1962), his focus moved to other realms of service, focusing on family and community. Joe and his wife worked to help raise money for Bernard to obtain an ambulance, a much needed service in their small community.
As he grew older, Joe developed a new delight—a love for baking sweet bread. His kitchen was often filled with the warm, inviting aromas of freshly baked loaves. He took immense joy in sharing these delectable creations with his neighbors and local businesses, forging connections through the simple act of giving.
Joe had a way with words and a love of writing letters—a heartfelt tradition where he celebrated birthdays and reached out to family members every month. Each letter was not merely ink on paper, but rather a lifeline of love.
He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, compassion, and community spirit. As we remember him, let us carry forward the love he sprinkled throughout the lives he touched and spread his kindness onward.
Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Alverna (Pfab) Schuster whom he married on May 04, 1963; his parents: William and Clara Schuster; siblings: Veronica (Al) Wickman, Henry (Bernice) Schuster, Ray (Lorraine) Schuster, Loras (Lois) Schuster, Dick (Geraldine) Schuster, Carol Lynch, Jerry Schuster, and Mary (Mahlon) Scheckel.
He is survived by his children: John “Rooster” Schuster, Lisa Schuster, and Joan (Paul) Sherrick; grandchildren: Olivia Sherrick and Raechel Sherrick; Brother Bill and his wife Lorraine, Sister-in-law Lola (Jerry) as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
His family would like to thank the caring staff of Avalon View nursing home and Missouri Palliative and Hospice Care.
No services will be held at this time, rather the family is planning a celebration of Joe, Alverna and the Schuster and Pfab families in Iowa this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the local Bernard Fire and Rescue: 547 Rolus Street, Bernard, IA 52032.
