Joseph M. Sokol

1933 - 2023

Joseph M. Sokol, 89, of Fawn Township, passed away peacefully at home Monday, May 15, 2023. He was born Sept. 1, 1933, in Herminie, a son of the late Peter and Mary (Spahic) Sokol. Joe was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy. He retired in 1994 after over 34 years of service from Oberg Industries, where he worked as a draftsman and surface grinder. Joe was a member of Guardian Angels Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Campus in Natrona Heights. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and afternoons listening to music at the Croatian Center. Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie (Ryba) Sokol; his seven children, Marie King, of Annapolis, Md., Joseph (Janet Lee) Sokol, of Tenino, Wash., Michael Sokol, of Natrona Heights, Paul (Ann) Sokol, Catherine Sokol (Deanna Gerhart), of Waldorf, Md., Helen (Doug) Phillip, of Corona Del-Mar, Calif., and Karen Sokol, of York; and by his 14 grandchildren, Rachel (Zack) Blewett, Michelle Sokol, Michael Sokol, Philip Sokol, Brian Sokol, Matthew Phillip, Ryan Phillip, Megan Phillip, Joshua Sokol, Elijah Jones, Alyssa Gerhart, Paige Johnson, Victoria Johnson and Darius Johnson. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, Peter (Rose) Sokol; his nephew, Thomas Sokol; and his son-in-law, Shawn Johnson. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the CICHOLSKI-ZIDEK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1522 Carlisle St., Natrona Heights, 724-224-8688, where a parting prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in Most Blessed Sacrament Campus. Burial with full military honors accorded by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Lower Burrell.
