Joseph Summers Sr.

1937 - 2024

Mr. Joseph William Summers, Sr., 86, of Frederick, MD, went on to Glory to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 13, 2024 surrounded by his family. Joseph was a great husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and great-uncle. He was known for his loving and kind nature, always bringing laughter and joy to those around him.

Jospeh was born June 22, 1937 in Westminster, MD to the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Hall) Summers. He was the second oldest of 11 children. Mr. Summers graduated from Robert Moten High School in 1955. He went on to work for Aero Jet for 21 years, the YMCA for 5 years, then Solarex where he retired after 13 years. He was not the type to sit at home, so he went back to work at Frederick Community College for 11 years before fully retiring. He was a long time member of Strawbridge United Methodist Church and his hobbies included watching The View, playing solitaire, listening to oldies and gospel music, and spending time with those he loved.

Joseph leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Cecelia (Morris) Summers; brother, Roland (Alice) Summers of Montgomery Village, MD; sisters Theodoshia Thompson and Nona Watts-Johnson both of Frederick, MD, and Hazel Willis of Westminster, MD; children, Debra Summers-Gaskins of Frederick, Sheila Harris of Trenton, NJ, Joseph Summers, Jr. of Hagerstown, MD, Stephanie (Perry) Harris of York, PA, Patricia Summers of Germantown, MD, Andre Zeigler of Frederick, MD, Teneeya Brown of Hagerstown, MD, Kenyan Summers and Whitney (Jerell) Jones both of Frederick, MD; as well as 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, special great-niece LaShine Summers and special friend Essie Wilson, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by brothers, Lawrence Summers, Jr., Clarence Summers, Luvine Summers, Sr., Marlyn Summers, and Edward Gaines; sister, Daisy Hollingsworth; children Gina Summers and Roger Thomas; 3 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.
