Joseph Zelinski Obituary

Published by Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc. - Shelby Township on Mar. 6, 2019.
Zelinski, Joseph Adam. Born July 6, 1995, deceased March 6, 2019, Age 23 Joey was a proud 2013 graduate of U of D Jesuit High School in Detroit where he was an honor student, a scholar athlete of the Varsity Hockey and Soccer Teams, a member of the Christian Service Team, and recipient of the Jesuit Scholarship to attend Marquette University. Joey graduated from Marquette on the Dean's list in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, Joey worked as a medical scribe in the ER at Grosse Pointe Beaumont Hospital. From elementary school on, he was a vital part of helping out his dad and uncle at Z's Villa whenever asked. He recently completed his volunteer training for hospice, and was in the process of applying to PA school. Joey will be remembered for his patience, hard work ethic, subtle sense of humor, genuine heart, calming presence, and gentle demeanor. Even though one of his favorite flicks was Nacho Libre, he considered himself a movie critic. He was a coffee connoisseur who needed a cup of single-origin, fair-trade organic whole bean brew every morning. Amongst his friends, he's the undisputed backyard sport champ. He was gifted with a green thumb, made obvious the summer of '18 when he resurrected a garden that had been dormant for nearly a decade. Procrastination came easy for Joe, but his drive to succeed always won out in the end, even if it meant sacrificing sleep for the library on some occasions. You could find Joey up at the crack of dawn if Liverpool FC had a match that morning, even if his peers might have been sleeping in after some late-night shenanigans. Joey had a way of transforming his hobbies into passions and possessed a contagious enthusiasm towards everyday life. He will be missed by his loving family, countless teammates from many sports, innumerable friends made through his 23 years, the Detroit Chapter of Liverpool supporters, countless co-workers, and so many more. Beloved son of Steve and Carol. Dear brother of Tommy and Jake. Loving grandson of the late Thomas (the late Clementine) Zelinski and Theresa (the late Robert) Cantlon. Nephew of Kathleen Cantlon, Robert (Debbie) Cantlon, Jr., John (Anna) Cantlon, Godmother Mary (Ron) Pasque, Mick Cantlon, Godfather Michael (Mary Lou), Suzanne (Henry) Danzinger, the late James (Laurel) Cantlon, the late Thomas P. (Kathy), and the late Patrick Nielsen. Joey is also remembered by many cousins, friends, classmates, and teammates. Visitation at Wujek-Calcaterra & Sons, Inc (Shelby Twp.) 54880 Van Dyke at 25 Mile rd. Sunday 2-8pm. Prayers at 7:00pm. Instate Monday 9:15 am at St. Mary of the Hills Church 2675 John R. (N. of Auburn Rd.) until 10:00 am time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the U of D Jesuit Joseph Zelinski Scholarship Fund. Carol and Steve, you catered my Mom and Dad's 50th wedding anniversary dinner in their condo in 1994. An event we cherish in our hearts forever. They lost their son (William Sabanos, Jr) in 1996. My mom always said, You never get over it; you get through it. My parents are now with my brother and I KNOW they are with your son watching over him until we are all United once again with them in Heaven. Please take heart that your son is where we all hope to be one day. God is good and He will get you through. Footprints in the sand. Our thoughts, prayers and hope are with you now and forever. Mary (Sabanos) and Larry Davis

Carol and Steve, The Zelinski and Cantlon family, we want you to know your children are our children. We fell your pain and your sorrow. We have have seen the Zelinski ,Cantlon children grow from little ones to wonderful young men and women. We know some children better than others, we still get all their names mixed up. That will go on for ever. We have gotten to know Joey better from all the great stories that were told about him. What a wonderful person he is. We know a couple of things for sure about all the Zelinski,Cantlon children and that is ,they love their family and care for their family, they love and care for others. When growing up I looked to my elders to inspire and motivate me. Being a elder now I think a lot about a particular pharse (been there ,done that). There is a lot of truth to that. Life can be boring, life can be stagnant, life can get repetative. When a tragedy like this happens life can be unbearable. I now look for people or groups of people to inspire and motivate me to get up and live the next day and the next day after that. Today after listening to all the young men and women talk about Joey and listening to all the Zelinski and Cantlon young men and women. These young men and women and Joey's legacy will inspire and motivate me to get up and live my life. Carol and Steve the Zelinski and Cantlon family, the Servite classmates will be there for you where ever and when ever you need us. Love you guy's

March 9, 2019

Dear Joey,

I watched you grow up, albeit from a distance. In my eyes you went from a rather quiet and shy boy to a confident, outgoing, and articulate young man. At my last encounter with you at a family gathering, I observed that you were poised to take on the world and I knew that you be a success, not only as the good human being that you always were, but also someone who would achieve remarkable things.

But now you are inexplicably gone, taken by an accident that had no meaning and left us all devastated. We mourn being unable to be in your physical presence any longer, though the memories of you will be long-lasting and bittersweet. We also mourn the loss of a future in which you would have triumphed.

We pray that your spirit will guide and protect us until we meet again.

Love,

Cousin Mark Vermilion
