Thelma Josephine (Ambrose) Heaps was born on December 29, 1942, to Walter Joseph and Thelma Mae (Rief) Ambrose in Lawton, Oklahoma. When her father entered WWII the family lived with grandparents. Until she was 12 the family farmed near Woodbine then moved to a farm near Council Bluffs. Josephine graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1960. She then attended UNO and Iowa State University. On January 6, 1963, Josephine married Bill Heaps at the Broadway United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs. In 1963 Bill and Josephine moved to New York where all four children were born. In 1976 the family moved to Dunlap. In 1989, Josephine completed her degrees at UNO and Iowa State. Josephine worked as a dietician until December 2015. Josephine loved serving her church family. Her personal relationship with God was of primary importance but she treasured her husband of 54 years, children and grand-children. A great deal of her life she spent praying with, praying for and caring for anyone in need. She took delight in having a large garden and growing flowers for display. Josephine and Bill enjoyed their vacations, traveling, and meeting people. They made friends all over the world. From Rose Vista in Woodbine, Iowa Josephine entered heaven on June 5, 2017, at the age of 74 years, five months, and seven days. Josephine was preceded in death by her father, Walter and her brother, Walter Jr. She is survived by her husband, Bill Heaps of Dunlap; four children, Bill Jr. (Mary) Heaps of Ozark, Missouri, Kimberly Heaps of Woodbine, John (Molly) Heaps of Dunlap, Jason Heaps of Aspen, Colorado; mother, Thelma Ambrose of Walnut, Iowa; two sisters, Sandra (LeRoy) Wood of Mount Ayr, Iowa and Marie (Chuck) King of Houston, Texas; six grand-children, Jordan and Grant (Bill Jr.), Noah (Kimberly), Joel and Justin (John), Jacob (Jason) and many other relatives and friends.

Bill and all of the family. I love you. In a short period of time Josephine became one of the best friends of my life. There is an empty space in my life that belongs to her. Her love for Jesus drew us together. Our friendship and sisterhood bound our spirits together for all eternity. I will miss her until I join her in Heaven with the one to whom we owe all. You ran a valiant race Josephine and endured in Him until the end. The Lord is proud of you and so are we! See you when I get there...

My sympathy to Bill and family. I wish I could have been there for you but God had other plans! I thought about you every day and my prayers continue. Her first day at Rose Vista, she asked me to pray with her in the spirit, and I did so without hesitation! Hugs for you all! She was a special lady! Love you all!

Josephine is a true saint! She showed us how to Love one another, How to support each other, How to cry, pray, lift each other up. Even when she was hurting herself, She put everyone else first! I'll never forget when I came home from work in the middle of the night & Josephine was hoeing my garden because she looked at it out her kitchen window! You will be Loved & missed until Bill & I join you & Sue in Heaven! Rest now! You have earned it.

Bill and Family,
We are so sorry to hear of Josephine's passing. It is our loss but heaven's gain! We weren't always good about getting together as often as we should have, but no matter how much time passed between visits, when we got together it was as if we had never been apart. I have not nor will I ever forget the many blessings that I experienced by knowing your family. Josephine had a very kind, loving and generous heart and gave the title of a prayer warrior new meaning. She went about each and every day of her life praying for her family and friends. It is our prayer now that God will wrap His loving arms around each and every one of you and that He will bring comfort and peace to all in this time of mourning.

Bill and Family,
My sincere sympathy on the loss of Josephine. I remember her as a very strong and caring woman. She was always ready to share garden produce with my mom, Helen DeLance, and even sent some home with me clear to South Dakota. I always so enjoyed visiting with her and appreciated her deep and steadfast faith. We did have some conversations about our mutual faith journeys. Thanks for being a friend, both to me, and my parents, Jo. I know you are with all the angels of heaven. Love, Karen

My family and I have been blessed beyond measure to have Josephine and Bill for friends.
Josephine was always straight to the point, you could count on it. She had a wonderfully disturbing ability to quickly get to what she thought of any situation.
I remember more than a few times I was embarrassed when she would call me out on something I should be or not be doing.

Josephine was honest, strong, and a guiding light for me personally.

To Bill, the children the grandchildren, how proud she must be to know what a fine family she has left us with.

My families thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this difficult time.

Lastly, Josephine, be patient in Heaven, they will all come around.

Jack

Josephine had a heart of gold an a love for her family and nature. In the warm months she was always working hard gardening. She will be missed by not only me, but many other friends and family. God will take care of her an I know she has a smile on her face, she is free, free with all the angels.

Bill and Kids,

It was 47 years ago when I met most of you and Josephine 'adopted' me as her cadet brother. My countless visits to Salisbury Mills then and my subsequent visits over the years on each of her birthdays are a fond and enduring memory. She carried her crosses well and is a suitable measure that we should all embrace. Rest in Peace, my good friend and keep the light shining for us.
