Josie Lee Moore, "Aunt Jo," 73, passed away Sunday, January 15, 2023, at Baptist Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. Josie was born on August 9, 1949, in Utica, Mississippi, to the late James Moore, Sr., and Sylvia Stamps Moore. She was preceded in death by her daughter Alberstine L. Moore and her sister and best friend, Alice Rushell Hunt; they were like two peas in a pod; you did not see one without the other. Her brothers, James Moore, Jr., Jerome L. Moore, and her grandsons, Andre Moore and Angelo Moore, preceded her in death. She is survived by her beloved sister Laura Bertha Ishman and brother Elbert Moore (Lil Bro), all of Jackson, Mississippi.
Josie lived a beautiful and dignified life, and her love for Christmas was unmatched. Her decorations were unparalleled even by Hallmark. A discerning woman of exquisite taste, she provided comfort and solace while asking little in return. Josie worked as a Nurses Aid at the University of Mississippi Hospital for over 15 years. She worked most recently for over 35 years at Briarwood Presbyterian Church on staff as the Childcare Administrator until the end. She was known throughout the community as "Ms. Josie and Moma." Her family and community were her sole focus; she fed and sheltered anyone that needed it. She worried over them and took care of them until the end, sometimes to the exclusion of her own needs. Josie was a free spirit; she believed in flexibility, 'modifications,' and change. She valued loyalty, honesty, and authenticity.
Josie is also survived by her sons Dr. John Fitzgerald Kennedy Moore (Dr. April D.) of Centreville, VA; Taaji Shahid Moore of Jackson, MS; daughters Charlotte D. McNeil of Jackson, MS; and Ponchie McCollough of Jackson, MS; two Special daughters, Shonda M. Moore of Jackson, MS and Callie Walker of Jackson, MS; 21 grandchildren: Ja'ohn Moore of Atlanta, GA, Jaz'mon Moore of Falls Church, VA, and Ja'rius Moore of Jackson, MS; Amber Tabb, and Chasity Tabb of Jackson, MS, and Ambrose Tabb of Atlanta, GA; Karam Moore of Atlanta, GA, Brandon Moore of Texas, Whitney Moore, Kirstin Moore, and Damion Moore all of Jackson, MS; Rakel McCullough of Stone Mountain, GA, Marquita Dunson of Byram, MS, and JenesisMcCollough of Jackson, MS; Tyshanlyn Windom of Texas, Christopher Trader, Dajoria Lindsey, and TyJuan Lindsey all of Jackson, Taaji Moore, Jr., Taraji Moore, and Na'Taajineia Moore of Wisconsin; 23 Great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, that were close to her.
