Joy “Jojo • Momo • Mom • Mama” Perez, 66, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 8, 2025, after a courageous 2½-year battle with cancer. Throughout her fight, Joy displayed remarkable strength, resilience, and unwavering determination. She never gave up—meeting each day with grace and hope—and was lovingly surrounded by her family in her final moments.
Born on October 2, 1959, to Vivian Barnes Chapman and John Chapman, Joy grew into a woman whose gentle heart and radiant smile could brighten any room. From childhood through adulthood, she was known for her kindness and her ability to make others feel seen, valued, and loved. Her compassion flowed naturally and generously, leaving a lasting imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
On December 27, 1977, Joy married the love of her life, Angel Perez. Together they shared nearly 48 years of a beautiful marriage built on mutual devotion, humor, faith, and the deepest affection. Their love story was an anchor for their family and an inspiration to all who witnessed it.
Joy embraced life through the simple, meaningful moments that brought people together. She delighted in cooking and baking—her home always filled with warmth, wonderful aromas, and an open-door welcome. She took great pride in watching her children and grandchildren play sports, cheering loudly and lovingly from the stands. Joy also found joy in crocheting blankets, painting pottery, tending to her garden, watching birds gather at her feeders, and spending time bowling with family and friends. Everything she created and every hobby she pursued was touched by her love and thoughtfulness.
Above all, Joy will be remembered for her sweet and gentle spirit. She was endlessly giving, selfless, and whole-hearted—offering support, comfort, and kindness without hesitation. To know Joy was to experience love in its purest form.
Joy is survived by her devoted husband, Angel Perez; her children, Steven Perez and Teresa “Cherie” Perez-Barnett; and her treasured grandchildren, Taylor, Kylie, Ila, Ethan, and Evan. She is also survived by her sister, Lori Hubbard of Ocala, Florida, along with numerous extended family members who dearly loved her and will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Vivian Barnes Chapman and John Chapman, as well as her siblings, Cindy Rumpza and John “Pete” Chapman.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at Carey Hand–Colonial Funeral Home.
Joy will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Cemetery on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
