Joy Yvonne Slusher passed into the arms of the Lord on March 21, 2024. She was 87. Visitation will take place March 26 from 4-8 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home West, 480 Resler. A graveside service will be conducted March 27 at 8:30 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park, 8700 Dyer, followed by the Celebration of her Life at 11 a.m. at Westside Community Church, 201 E. Sunset.
She was born in Athens, Tennessee to Alex and Lillian (Jones) McConkey.
She was a proud graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso and a dedicated employee of Mithoff Advertising/Mithoff Burton Partners, serving for more than 50 years as office manager.
She was active in numerous organizations and initiatives through the years, from Beta Sigma Phi to El Paso Community Foundation and an avid supporter of the arts—and any activity or program that would benefit the city. She loved being an El Pasoan. Her name is a reflection of the way she lived her life: Jesus first, Others second and Yourself last. She was a longtime member of Mt. Franklin Baptist Church, now Westside Community Church.
Mrs. Slusher was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Harold Slusher, an infant son, Dewey Alexander Slusher, two sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Slusher Magers, and husband Gary, of Cleburne, Texas; grandchildren Jesse Magers and wife Yazmin, and Joy Magers Cooke and husband, Ryan; great-granddaughters Elisabeth Joy, Lillian Jane and Caroline Joan Cooke, all of Grand Prairie, Texas, several nieces and one nephew.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Plaza Theatre Endowment Fund at El Paso Community Foundation, PO Box 272, El Paso, TX 79943
