Joyce Charlene Bridges, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted friend, passed away on May 7, 2025, at the age of 85. Born to parents, Charlie and Elva (Roberts) Wilkerson, on July 19, 1939, in Fisk, Missouri, Joyce lived a life enriched with love, family, and dedicated service to her community.
Joyce's career as a substitute teacher transitioned into a cherished role as the in-school suspension teacher, where her dedication to serving her students shone brightly. She was not just an educator but a positive role model who deeply cared for each child she encountered. Her impact on the lives of her students is a testament to her nurturing spirit and commitment to their growth.
A proud matriarch, Joyce adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She fostered a warm and loving family environment, particularly during the holiday season, which held a special place in her heart. Christmases at her home were filled with joy, featuring dinner at noon and countless thoughtful gestures for each family member. Thanksgiving was another cherished occasion spent at deer camp, where laughter and special memories were made with her loved ones.
Joyce's passions extended beyond her family. She had a zest for life, enjoying traveling, especially cruises, and immersing herself in various arts and crafts. She loved to gather with friends to play Bean Bag Ball at Bishop Park in Bryant and found joy while camping at Lake Degray. Shopping brought her immense happiness, where she delighted in the thrill of finding just the right items.
A faithful member of the Springhill Missionary Baptist Church, Joyce loved the Lord and was active in her church, drawing strength from her faith throughout her life.
Joyce's legacy is carried on by her loving children: Sondra Kay Covert and husband Robert of Dacula, Georgia; Hal David Bridges and wife Karen of Sheridan, Arkansas; Lamera Kim Wheelbarger and husband Wayne of Benton, Arkansas; Jennie Lynn Standridge and husband Guy of Lonsdale, Arkansas; and Dale Alan Bridges and wife Tammy of Bauxite, Arkansas. She also leaves behind a cherished family of 14 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren, as well as her devoted companion, Onial Cook. Many family members and friends will hold Joyce close in their hearts and miss her deeply.
Joyce was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ambrose Davis Bridges, parents, Charlie and Elva Wilkerson; and her siblings: Everett Wilkerson, Joseph Lawrence Wilkerson, James Edward Wilkerson, Bernie Alanzo Wilkerson, Silas Ray Wilkerson, Carolyn Freeman, and Donny Gene Wilkerson.
Her presence will forever remain in the cherished memories of those she loved and whose lives she touched. A visitation will be held at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church in Alexander, Arkansas, from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM on May 12, 2025, followed by a funeral service from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the same location. Joyce will then be laid to rest at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander, Arkansas, at 3:00 PM. Assisting as pallbearers are her grandsons: David, Charles, Bradley, Jason, Michael, Brandon, AJ, and Kasey.
In this time of loss, may we take comfort in the love Joyce shared with each of us and the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
