Joyce Pauline Houchens, of Temple Hills, Maryland was the beloved mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on January 26, 2017. Joyce was born on May 22, 1939, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the late Margaret Lee Leake and Reuben Benjamin Houchens Sr. Joyce grew up in Southeast Washington, D.C., where she attended Anacostia High School, and later worked with United Airlines for 12 years before continuing her career with NAPA Auto Parts until her retirement in 2009.
Joyce’s life was filled with love and devotion to her family. She shared a 21-year relationship with the late Dorothy “Dottie” Twilley, with whom she had a son, Joseph Anthony Houchens. After Dottie’s passing on July 7, 1978, Joyce found love again with Jennie Lynn Sullivan. The two were partners for 37 years until Joyce’s passing. Joyce is survived by her son, Joseph Anthony Houchens (Curtis), her brothers Nelson Houchens (Joette), and Reuben Houchens Jr. (Linda), and her younger sister, Sherry Bly (Omer). She was preceded in death by her older sister, Teresa Hicks, (Vance), and her parents. Joyce will be remembered for her love of life’s simple pleasures—family gatherings, time with friends, and her many visits to her favorite spot, the Dallas Kitchen. Known for her warmth, kindness, and infectious laughter, Joyce had a special way of making everyone feel at home, though she never hesitated to speak her mind when needed. Her spirit and strength will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love and support during this time. In her memory, we celebrate the joy she brought to our lives, her deep devotion to her family, and the kindness she shared with all.
Rest in peace, Joyce, you will always be loved and remembered.
