Obituary published on Legacy.com by Royal Funeral Home, Inc. - Huntsville on Dec. 18, 2024.
Mother Joyce Marie Jamar was born in Toney, AL to the late John Dillard Hatchett and Gracie (Bonner) Hatchett and reared in Toney, AL. She transitioned to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.
She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Turner's Chapel Church. After relocating from Nashville, TN to Huntsville, she joined St. James Primitive Baptist Church where she was a devoted mother and member of the choir for over 40 years. She later united with Phillips Tabernacle and remained faithful until her health began to decline.
As a child growing up, she shared many stories about life as a country girl, picking cotton and fearing worms while in the field. She would help her mother in the kitchen and gained excellent cooking skills that made her one of the best as an adult. There was no one who could make biscuits, teacakes, butter rolls, salmon patties, vegetable soup and cornbread like her.
Mother Jamar was a graduate of Councill Training School in Normal, AL. After graduation, she moved to Nashville, TN and married in 1956. To that union five children were born. While living in Nashville, she was employed at Vanderbilt Hospital as a nurse's aide. She continued working in the medical field and eventually became a psychiatrist technician after moving to Huntsville. It was evident to all who knew Joyce Marie that she was gifted with the ministry of helping and caring for others.
She was gifted with a singing voice, and she loved to use it. One of her favorite songs was "Thank You Lord for Blessing Me Again" that she would often sing at various church programs. She loved to worship and praise the Lord and could be seen on many occasions during her illness lifting her hands in praise.
In 1970, she married Raymond Jamar and to that union a son was born.
Mother Jamar was a dedicated member of the Mizpah Chapter #37 Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated, until her health declined.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings: John, Willie, James, Joe, David, Nollon, Lorenzo, Houston, and Catherine Hatchett.
Those left to cherish the memory and legacy of Mother Jamar include her husband of 54 years, Raymond Jamar; children: Teresa (Tommie) Batts, Ulysses (Angela) Collier, Rickey Collier, Zenobia (Steve) Ryan, Patsy Prevost, Reginald (Kari) Jamar; stepdaughter, Monica Jefferson; thirteen grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters: Mable Fletcher, Nashville, TN and Lorean (Walter) Jones, Xenia, OH, brother, Reverend Ollie (Cleotha) Hatchett,
