Joyce Ann Krochta, a lifelong Indiana resident most recently of McCordsville, died Thursday, February 20, 2025. Joyce was born February 15, 1937 to Nicholas and Anna "Lala" (Romanyak) Krochta in Gary. She graduated from the Indiana School for the Deaf in 1957 where she made many lifelong friends. She lived most of her life in Gary and Valparaiso and worked at Bank of Indiana for 29 years. A competitive bowler for more than 40 years, Joyce was inducted into the Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 2006. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends visiting Italy, Bermuda, Panama, among others.
An avid sports fan, she was particularly fond of the Cubs, Bears, Bulls and IU basketball. In 2024, she celebrated her 87th birthday in Bloomington at Assembly Hall.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents Nick and Lala, brother-in-law Richard Whitlow, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
She is survived by her sister, Barbara Whitlow of Fishers, IN, nephew Rich (Liz) Whitlow of Chesterton, IN nieces Diane (Tim) Smith of San Francisco, CA and Suzanne (Zack) Tilden of Fishers; grand-nieces and grand-nephews: Adam, Lauren, Frederick and Mia Whitlow; Jeremiah and Quincy Smith; and Chris Tilden; many cousins, close friend Judith Spicer and her cherished dog, Happy.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 1,2025 from 10-11a.m. at the Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church (8600 Grand Blvd, Merrillville); funeral to follow at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. Dr. Jacob Van Sickle officiating. Interment at Protection of the Virgin Mary Church Cemetery, 4401 W. Ridge Rd., Gary.
Celebration of life will be held at a later date at Greater Indianapolis Deaf Club.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Indiana School for the Deaf, 1200 42nd St, Indianapolis, IN 46205, TradeWinds Services (Formerly Deaf Services), 3198 East 83rd Place, Merrillville, IN 46410, or Protection of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church.
