Joyce Mau Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Myers Mortuary & Cremation Services at Alpine Road from Jun. 10 to Jun. 15, 2023.
Joyce Juanita Edgar Mau passed away peacefully after a long illness in Columbia, SC, on June 9,
2023. She was 96 years old.
Mrs. Mau was born in Washington County, near Tennille, GA, the daughter of Eugene Edgar and
Mary Virginia Lowe Edgar, who preceded her in death. Soon after graduating from high school,
her family moved to Macon, GA. She married George Mau III in 1955, whom she met when he
was a law student at Mercer University School of Law. They raised two children and enjoyed
traveling the country together. They were married 38 years before his passing in 1993.
Before becoming a homemaker and mother, Mrs. Mau served as a bank teller, first at First
National Bank in Macon, then at the Morris State Bank in Dublin, GA, and after marriage at First
National Bank in Atlanta. She often spoke with pride about her work as head teller and the
processes she put in place to help the Morris Bank earn its charter as a state bank.
She loved her adopted city of Macon, but in 2011 Mrs. Mau moved to Columbia, SC, to live with
her son and his family. She took great pleasure in attending special events with her
grandchildren and loved seeing them grow and mature. She was a member of St. Andrews
Presbyterian Church and attended faithfully for many years.
Mrs. Mau was preceded in death by her husband, George, and her daughter, Johanna Edgar
Mau, as well as two of her sisters, Yvonne Edgar O'Brien and Barbara Edgar O'Byrne. She is
survived by her son, George Fredric Mau (Sandy Mau) of Columbia, SC, and her three
grandchildren, Amelia Joyce Mau of Eugene, OR; Carolyn Sarah Mau of Philadelphia, PA; and
George Alexander Mau of College Station, TX. She is also survived by two sisters, Frances
Barrineau of Macon, GA, and Faye Stallings of Port Orange, FL, and the children, grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren of her sisters.
