Joyce Arlene Morrissey

February 23, 1928 – February 13, 2026

Joyce A. Morrissey, age 97, of Newark Valley, NY, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026, at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital following a brief illness. At her side in her final hours were three nieces whose love and devotion brought her great comfort, the same steadfast presence they had offered following the passing of her beloved husband. Her sons, too, were an immense source of strength during that tender time.

She was born on February 23, 1928, in Greene, New York, to Ida (Cooper) Acly and Berthold Acly. She grew up in the community she would always call home, shaped by a quiet strength and a spirited nature that those who knew her would recognize throughout her life. She played basketball and field hockey during her years at Greene Central High School, graduating with the Class of 1946. She was among the first women to receive an athletic letter from Greene Central, a distinction that spoke not only to her skill, but to her character and determination at a time when such recognition for women was rare.

Following graduation, she joined the Raymond Corporation as an administrative assistant, a role she carried out with the same care and competence she brought to everything in life. It was during this chapter, while roller skating with friends in Sidney, New York, that she met Dennis Morrissey, the man who would become her beloved husband and the love of her life. They were married in May of 1955, and shared 58 years together, a partnership built on laughter, loyalty, and love.

When their children arrived, she stepped away from her career to become a full-time mother, a role she embraced wholeheartedly. As her children grew older, she rediscovered her love of bowling, dabbled in ceramics, and swam regularly at the Boys Club. She also cherished quiet moments observing nature, the birds at her feeders and the deer that would visit her yard in the evening.

She made friends easily and kept them for life. Her warm personality and wonderful sense of humor were among her greatest gifts. She loved exchanging jokes, telling a good story, and drawing laughter from everyone around her. Her lifelong friends, many of whom predeceased her and were deeply missed, were a cherished part of the fabric of her long and joyful life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dennis Morrissey; their son, Daniel (Danny); and many cherished friends and relatives.

She is survived by her sons, Timothy Morrissey and Thomas (Delores) Morrissey; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild; her brother, Avery (Irma) Acly; and several nieces and nephews.

She lived 97 years with grace, humor, and an open heart. She will be remembered not only for who she was, but for the laughter she brought, the friends she made, and the life she lived so fully.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Grant House, whose kindness, compassion, and dedication provided her with a warm and loving home in her final chapter

Special thanks to her nieces Laura, Linda, and Angie for always being there for us.
