Joyce Bowen Nunnery, a cherished educator, devoted mother, and beloved member of her community, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was born on June 30, 1935, in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Tom and Vida Mae Bowen. She dedicated her life to teaching the children of Cumberland County, a vocation she embraced as her true calling. Her commitment to education was matched only by her unwavering love for her family and faith.

Joyce’s career was marked not only by her professionalism but by the profound impact she had on countless students over the years. A Sunday School Teacher for more than 50 years, she infused her lessons with a sense of humor and compassion, nurturing her students' hearts as well as their minds. Her determination, faithfulness, and loyalty were hallmarks of her character, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

A proud graduate of Winthrop College, Joyce was a charter member of Arran Lake Baptist Church, a place she considered her second home. It was here that she built lifelong friendships and found a community that embraced her spirit of generosity and kindness. Joyce’s devotion to her church family brought her immense joy, reflecting her belief in service and fellowship.

Joyce was a passionate Duke basketball fan, often cheering for her team with vivacity and enthusiasm. Beyond sports, she adored spending time with her family, to whom she dedicated her life. Her greatest pride came from her children—Jayne Hearn, Mike Nunnery (Marina), Sally Balch (Charles), and David Nunnery (Leslie)—and her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, who were the bright stars in her life. Joyce's treasured pup, Magnolia, and her extended family will carry on her spirit, reminding us all of the joyous moments and laughter she brought into life.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years, Curt Nunnery, Jr. and her brother, Thomas Bowen.

Her visitation will be held at Arran Lake Baptist Church in Fayetteville, NC, on February 18, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 PM. She will be laid to rest at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Fort Bragg, NC.

Joyce Bowen Nunnery leaves behind an enduring legacy of love, education, and faith. As we come together to honor her life, let us celebrate the joy she brought to our lives and the lessons she imparted, holding close to our hearts the memory of a remarkable woman who will be forever missed.
