Joyce Van Sciver

On Sunday, January 19, 2025, Joyce Van Sciver, passed away at the age of 77 after a brave battle with cancer.
Joyce was born on April 26, 1947, in Chicago, IL to Albert and Kate (Chapman) Schuman. After graduating from Niles West High School in 1965, she went on to receive her bachelor's degree from Southern Illinois University.
Joyce began a distinguished career in Human Resources, working for the same company for over 25 years, now known as Thomson Reuters. During her time there she made lifelong friends and always took great pride in her career and getting the job done right. Joyce never missed a birthday, anniversary, or celebration, always sending cards in the mail when she couldn't be there. She loved a good mahjong game with friends.
Her biggest passion in life was her family. Her sons Michael (1974) and Brian (1977) were always "her boys." In 1984 she met Lyle and the two married in 1991, recently celebrating their 33rd anniversary. Joyce was always the one checking in on everyone else. From weekly calls with her brother, Jeffrey, to checking in on the grandchildren and nieces on a regular basis. Even though her family and friends were spread across the country, Joyce truly had a unique and special relationship with each and every one.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents Kate and Albert Schuman. She is survived by her husband Lyle, her sons Michael (Whitney) and Brian Fletcher, grandchildren Payton Fletcher, Owen and Piper Price, her brother Jeffrey (Diane) Schuman, and her nieces Jamie (Matthew) Ravdin, Allison Solano and Kate (Jeremy) Lieberman. Her loss is also felt by numerous other cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank Joyce's caregiver, T, for the compassionate and selfless care given over the last 3-4 months. Joyce loved T like family, and T loved her back.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to either the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (she always was a Daddy's girl).
