Juan Francisco Mares

Well-known Arroyo Seco stone mason, carpenter and builder, Juan Francisco Mares, also known as Johnny Madrid in his younger years, passed away on Saturday, October 11th, 2025, at his home in Arroyo Seco. He was 61 years old. He is survived by his only son Chris Madrid of Taos; his partner of thirteen years Heather Anderson who lived and cared for him through a lengthy illness; and six brothers and sisters who adored their little brother; Ernest Ortega, Douglas Ortega, Ruby Parkhurst (Ted), Brenda Ortega Sherrell (Rob), Mario Madrid (Heather), Mark Ortega (Ann) and many nephews and nieces. Juan was a beautiful soul, loved by his family and friends for his gentle nature and kindness towards everyone he met. As a highly skilled carpenter, he was always willing to help people in need and was especially valued for his beautiful rock walls and fireplaces. Juan was the youngest of a close-knit family that grew up together and helped each other through thick and thin. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness that we will always remember. He left us too soon and we miss and love him forever. Rest in peace, little brother. You are in God's hands now and we will see you on the other side. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rose Ortega of Arroyo Seco, his father Frank Mares, his half-brother Francisco Mares and his grandparents Buenaventura and Manuelita Madrid of Arroyo Seco. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the DeVargas Funeral Home in Taos.
