Ms. McCarty passed away at Carriage House Manor in Sulphur Springs on Monday, August 12, 2024.
Juanita Merle McCarty was born on November 28, 1930 in Cumby, Texas to Holton Dewitt and Nellie (Butler) Barrett. She married Errol Laverne McCarty in Sulphur Springs in April, 1947. Merle worked at H.D. Lee, Cannon Craft and was a caregiver for over 10 years. Merle was bright, kind, loving, caring, and a wonderful Mother, Mother-in-law, Wife, Granny, friend, and neighbor. She loved her family more than anything, and they felt the same about her. She cooked lavish meals for the family get-togethers and always insisted on leading the meal-time prayers. She was a dedicated family prayer warrior during good and bad times. She loved traveling and found comfort in gardening/working in her flower beds when she was able and even mowed her yard for many years. Merle enjoyed secretly taking her daughter to the drag strip outside of town and letting her race the family car. It was also known that if Merle flashed the porch light three times it meant “get in the house”. She was the Calvary Baptist Church Secretary for Sunday School for well over 20 years and an active church member.
Merle is survived by her son, Mitchel McCarty (Nancy) of Posey, Texas; daughter, Sharon Chamness (Billy Mack) of Sulphur Springs; grandchildren, Robby Chamness, Keisha Wilkinson, Chaisen Chamness, Brent Johnson (Rachael), Tamara Johnson Sims, Micah McCarty, Marcus McCarty, Lance McCarty, Mary McCarty Smith (Mike); and great-grandchildren, Olivia, Nicholas, Michael, Madeline, Isabella, Gavin, Gracie, Raven, Bryson, Savannah, Laiken, Amanda, Josh, Jimmy, Martha; great-great grandchildren, Bentley, Kaiden, Rylan, Brailon, Slaiden, and coming soon-Tyler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Holton and Nellie Barrett; husband, Errol Laverne McCarty; brothers, Loyd Thomas, Walter Barrett, Bill Barrett, and Gene Barrett; and sisters, Lillian Carpenter, June Matthews, Ruby Smith, Wanda Alexander, and Leona Barrett.
