Judge Breland was a kind soul who had nothing but gracious and inspiring words. He lifted up so many and his passion for Decatur was unmatched.

The individual lives of each member of our family have been eternally blessed and enriched by having known David Breland. For myself personally, that relationship has been experienced both as a friend and professional colleague in working with at-risk kids and families. Having known firsthand his integrity and character, it was Judge Breland whom I requested to do my swearing in after being elected to the Decatur City Council long ago. More recently, I will forever treasure the privilege of having worked alongside him as a committee of three, with June Odom as well, on what would regrettably prove to be one of his final projects: the establishment of a historic marker at First Baptist Church in Decatur. This of course was but one of numerous local congregations and groups he assisted. Indeed, my gratitude for his life, alongside the sadness for his loss, is tempered with grief and apprehension that David Breland - in the tradition of Bill Dukes, Sue Roan, and a short list of others - may have been among the last uniquely southern, universally beloved, politicians the people of Morgan County have been privileged to know, and may never see the likes of again.

With gratitude,
The Rays - Mark, Tommy, and Ann (Mrs. Joe D.)
